A 1954 R & B #1 Roy Hamilton, and long one of Elvis` all-time favourite tunes, Elvis finally recorded this Richard Rodgers / Oscar Hammerstein-penned spiritual in Nashville on September 11th, 1967. He played the piano himself at what started out as a jam and ended as a passionate Elvis gospel song. "You`ll Never Walk Alone" was initially a show tune for 1945 musical Carousel, before being covered, among others by, Judy Garland, Gerry and The Pacemakers, and many of Elvis` favorite gospels singers. Heartbreak Hotel # Comeback Special (1968) "Heartbreak Hotel" was released as a single on January 27, 1956 with B-side "I Was the One", a song that was also recorded during Presley's RCA debut sessions.The lyrics were written by a steel guitar player from Nashville named Tommy Durden, who was once a dishwasher repairman. He was inspired by a newspaper story about a man who killed himself and left behind a note saying only, "I walk a lonely street." Another Nashville songwriter named Mae Boren Axton wrote the music, and Elvis' manager Tom Parker arranged for Elvis to receive a songwriting credit in exchange for singing it. This meant that royalties were split between Durden, Axton, and Elvis. In a 1982 interview, Durden said this song "has paid the rent for more than 20 years."Mae Axton was living in Jacksonville when this was written. She got a local Country singer to do the demo for Elvis, who did the demo the way he thought Elvis would do it. Elvis liked it, and did it exactly that way.
