Welcome to the 11th Dimension - The Elegant Universe - PBS NOVA 55.90 min. | 4.8422713 avaliação | 210507 exibições Welcome to the 11th Dimension - The Elegant Universe - PBS NOVA Part 3 of "The Elegant Universe" with host Brian Greene shows how Edward Witten of Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, aided by others, revolutionized string theory by successfully uniting the five different versions into a single theory that is cryptically named "M-theory," a development that requires a total of eleven dimensions. Ten...eleven...who's counting? But the new 11th dimension implies that strings can come in shapes called membranes, or "branes" for short. These have truly science fiction-like qualities, since in principle they can be as large as the universe. A brane can even be a universe?a parallel universe?and we may be living on one right now. Witten has described string theory as "a part of 21st-century physics that fell by chance into the 20th century." In fact, the theory is so far ahead of experimental technique that there is as yet no way to verify whether strings are real. But scientists at the CERN atom-smasher on the French-Swiss border are working to test of one of the predictions of string theory. This experiment may take an important step in showing that string theory is not just a crazy idea, but crazy reality.. + Informações |

The Elegant Universe -1 9.13 min. | 4.8728814 avaliação | 235829 exibições No religious preachers. When you preach your religion every 5-10 mins in course of a scientific discussion, it basically reflects on your lack of confidence and esteem. It means you cannot even handle an information stream without bringing your own scriptures to the table and getting all defensive! This video-series talks about the various fources in our universe and the attempts made by Physicists to bring them all under one umbrella, under a [Theory of Everything]. It tries to [illustrate] some of the [physics-centered] problems we face about this universe. Click here for a more detailed description : www.pbs.org PS This is a really dumbed down video, if you are interested in the book of the same title, which makes a more technical read - Be sure to order one from www.amazon.com. + Informações |

Einstein's Dream - The Elegant Universe - PBS NOVA 56.13 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 18153 exibições Einstein's Dream - The Elegant Universe - PBS NOVA Eleven dimensions, parallel universes, and a world made out of strings? It's not science fiction, it's string theory. Bestselling author and physicist Brian Greene offers a tour of this seemingly strange world in "The Elegant Universe," a three-hour Peabody Award-winning miniseries. Part 1, "Einstein's Dream," introduces string theory and shows how modern physics?composed of two theories that are ferociously incompatible?reached its schizophrenic impasse: One theory, general relativity, successfully describes big things like stars and galaxies, while another, quantum mechanics, is equally successful at explaining small things like atoms and subatomic particles. Albert Einstein, the inventor of general relativity, dreamed of finding a single theory that would embrace all of nature's laws. But in this quest for the so-called unified theory, Einstein came up empty-handed, and the conflict between general relativity and quantum mechanics has stymied all who've followed. That is, until the discovery of string theory.. + Informações |

Gravity - From Newton to Einstein - The Elegant Universe 9.52 min. | 4.897124 avaliação | 400364 exibições From the NOVA PBS series "THE ELEGANT UNIVERSE', host Brian Greene guides us through Newton's discovery of gravity to the explanation of it, through Einsteins Theory of Relativity. Brian Greene is a theoretical physicist and one of the best-known string theorists. Since 1996 he has been a professor at Columbia University. The Elegant Universe was adapted for a three hour program in three parts for television broadcast in late 2003 on the PBS series NOVA. www.pbs.org. + Informações |

String's The Thing - The Elegant Universe - PBS NOVA 56.15 min. | 4.733333 avaliação | 13827 exibições String's The Thing - The Elegant Universe - PBS NOVA In the second hour of "The Elegant Universe," a three-hour miniseries with physicist Brian Greene, delve into the nuts, bolts, and outright nuttiness of string theory. Part 2, "String's the Thing," opens with a whimsical scene in a movie theater in which the history of the universe runs backwards to the Big Bang, the moment at which general relativity and quantum mechanics both came into play, and therefore the point at which our conventional model of reality breaks down. Then it's string theory to the rescue as Greene describes the steps that led from a forgotten 200-year-old mathematical formula to the first glimmerings of strings?quivering strands of energy whose different vibrations give rise to quarks, electrons, photons, and all other elementary particles. Strings are truly tiny, being smaller than an atom by the same factor that a tree is smaller than the solar system. But, as Greene explains, they are able to combine the laws of the large and the laws of the small into a proposal for a single, harmonious theory of everything. But even with its many theoretical successes, as of the 1990s physicists realized that strings suffered from a pernicious flaw?an embarrassment of riches: There were five different versions of the theory, each totally out of sync with the others. We have one universe, so shouldn't there be one theory of everything?. + Informações |

The Elegant Universe Einstein's Dream Part 5-6 Legendado 10.00 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 539 exibições The Elegant Universe is a book by Brian Greene published in 1999 which introduces string theory and provides a comprehensive though non-technical assessment of the theory and some of its shortcomings. The book is divided into three themes in the following parts: Part I: The Edge of Knowledge Part II: The Dilemma of Space, Time, and the Quanta Part III: The Cosmic Symphony Part IV: String Theory and the Fabric of Spacetime Part V: Unification in the Twenty-First Century Beginning with a brief consideration of classical physics, which concentrates on the major conflicts in physics, Greene establishes a historical context for string theory as a necessary means of integrating the probabilistic world of the standard model of particle physics and the deterministic Newtonian physics of the macroscopic world. Greene discusses the essential problem facing modern physics: unification of Albert Einstein's theory of General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. Greene suggests that string theory is the solution to these two conflicting approaches. Greene frequently uses analogies and thought experiments to provide a means for the layman to come to terms with the theory which has the potential to create a unified theory of physics. Começando com uma breve consideração da física clássica, que se concentra nos grandes conflitos da física dessa época, Greene estabelece um contexto histórico para a teoria das cordas como um meio necessário de integrar o probabilístico mundo dos modelos .... + Informações |
