The history of Be Thou My Vision set to the tune of Sonny`s Dream is as follows; This song in the original Old Irish text, Rop tú mo Baile is often attributed to Dallan Forgaill in the 8th century. The text had been a part of Irish monastic tradition for centuries before its setting to the tune and before it became an actual hymn. It was translated from Old Irish into English by Mary E. Byrne in 1905. The English text was first versified by Eleanor H. Hull, in 1912, and is now the most common text used. This song, I felt, fitted nicely with the tune of "Sonny's Dream", which itself is a folk song written by Ron Hynes in 1976. The painting is by Briton Rivière (1840 -- 1920) who was an artist born in London, England, of Hugenout descent. It is known as "Daniel's answer to the King", painted in 1890, and it is now in the Manchester City Art Gallery.. + Informações

From Eden's Bridge album: Celtic Reflections On Hymns, (C) 1999 StraightWay Music [they did an excellent job with this... pure and beautiful] Our latest worship (RiverCrestChurch.org) using impressionist painting as a backdrop. Nothing profound in the visual effects used (so as to not take away from the song), but a wonderful hymn performed in a celtic form that speaks to its origins, which I am sharing below from wikipedia: History: The original Old Irish text, "Rop tú mo Baile" is often attributed to Dallan Forgaill in the 6th century. The text had been a part of Irish monastic tradition for centuries before its setting to the tune, therefore, before it became an actual hymn[citation needed]. It was translated from Old Irish into English by Mary E. Byrne, MA, in Ériu (the journal of the School of Irish Learning), in 1905. The English text was first versified by Eleanor H. Hull, in 1912, and is now the most common text use. The music is the Irish folk song, Slane, which is about Slane Hill where in AD 433 St. Patrick defied the pagan High King Lóegaire of Tara by lighting candles on Easter Eve. Besides this general connection to Christianity, the folk song has little prior connection to the text. The two were first combined by Welsh composer David Evans in the 1927 edition of the Church of Scotland's Church Hymnary.. + Informações

This hymn was composed in the 8th century by an unknown poet. In 1905, Mary Elizabeth Bryne, a scholar in Dublin, Ireland, translated this ancient Irish poem into English. Later, another scholar, Eleanor Hull of Manchester, English, took Bryne's translation and created verses with rhyme and meter. It was then set to this traditional Irish folk song "Slane". Lyrics: Irish hymn, c. 8th century Music: Irish melody -- Slane. + Informações

Famous Lady Eleanor, hit single from the LP Nicely Out Of Tune released by Lindisfarne in 1970. We played this song a little bit different to the original version with sax and violin on a session in our favoured pub in Naumburg in November 2010. A tribute to Lindisfarne singer & writer Alan Hull who died 15 years ago. I think this must be the only tribute concert in Germany especially in the east of Germany, where only a few people know this legendary group from Newcastle upon Tyne.. + Informações

This is probably my favorite hymn from the Celtic tradition. The tune comes from a very old Irish folk song entitled "Slane" which is about a place called Slane Hill where supposedly in AD 433 St. Patrick defied the pagan High King Lóegaire of Tara by lighting candles on Easter Eve. Centuries later though the tune was used for an Old Irish hymn entitled, "Rop tú mo Baile." It was translated from Old Irish into English by Mary E. Byrne, MA, in Ériu (the journal of the School of Irish Learning), in 1905. The English text was first versified by Eleanor H. Hull, in 1912, and is now the most common text used. Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art. Thou my best Thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true Word; I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I Thy true son; Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one. Riches I heed not, nor mans empty praise, Thou mine Inheritance, now and always: Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art. My dear friend Peter rang me this evening and asked me if I knew the hymn 'Be Thou My Vision'. I answered 'No!' but on hearing him sing the first couple of lines, I recognized the tune. We used to sing 'Lord of all hopefulness' to it. He wants me to sing 'Be Thou My Vision' for his fellowship group on Wednesday next, so I thought I had better learn it and practise. There is no better way to do that than trying to get it good enough for a Youtube video, so here is the result of about an hour's work. On searching for the lyrics I also found this information about the hymn and the tune:- Words: Attributed to Dallan Forgaill, 8th Century (Rob tu mo bhoile, a Comdi cride); translated from ancient Irish to English by Mary E. Byrne, in Eriú, Journal of the School of Irish Learning, 1905, and versed by Eleanor H. Hull, 1912, alt. Music: Slane, of Irish folk origin. + Informações

This traditional Irish melody is performed on my Hohner Ventura IV, an accordion with musette tuning. The words are attributed to Dallan Forgaill (530-598), with the poem translated from ancient Irish by Mary E. Byrne (1880-1931), published in "Eriu," the Journal of the School of Irish Learning in 1905. Eleanor H. Hull (1860-1935) versed this translation in 1912. This melody is also known as "Slane," a reference to Slane Hill near Tara in County Meath. According to Irish folk history, it was here that in 433 AD St. Patrick lit candles on Easter Eve despite High King Logaire's decree against such a lighting ceremony. The words of the poem begin, "Rob tu mo bhoile, a Comdi cride," also in an alternate spelling, "Rop tu mo baile, a Choimdiu cride." This video is dedicated to my friend Noah, one of the best drummers and guitarists I've ever met. Noah has an intuitive gift for music which can at times be dazzling, highly creative and perpetually rewarding. This tune is one of Noah's favorites, one he performs in the Celtic drum style.USA and Canada Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976, allowance is made for fair use for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
