If I had to choose my favorite piece of music for the human voice, it would undoubtebly be Solveig's Song from Grieg's "Peer Gynt". It's in the deceptive simplicity of the piece where lies the beauty. But, strangely enough, of all the versions available there is not one which seems to be the ultimate version. Even Lucia Popp's version, good as it is, is lacking something. The present recording doesn't feature any singers at all, replacing the singer with violins. It remains my favorite version of this song, as it somehow manages to capture each strand of Solveig's sorrow. I hope you will enjoy this :-)! In the Hall of the Mountain King (Norwegian: I Dovregubbens hall) is a piece of orchestral music, Opus 23, composed by Edvard Grieg for Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt, which premiered in Oslo on February 24, 1876. (It was later extracted as the final piece of Peer Gynt, Suite No. 1, Op. 46.) Edvard Grieg (15 June 1843 4 September 1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist who composed in the Romantic period. Grieg is renowned as a nationalist composer, drawing inspiration from Norwegian folk music. Rikard Nordraak was a very good friend of his, and he was also a composer. When he died, in 1866, Grieg composed this funeral march in his honor. The first paintings till 4:34 are from Caspar David Friedrich (1774 - 1840) was a 19th-century German Romantic landscape painter, generally considered the most important of the movement. He is best known for his mid-period allegorical landscapes which typically feature contemplative figures silhouetted against night skies, morning mists, barren trees or Gothic ruins. His primary interest as an artist was the contemplation of nature, and his often symbolic and anti-classical work seeks to convey a subjective, emotional response to the natural world. Friedrich's work characteristically sets the human element in diminished perspective amid expansive landscapes, reducing the figures to a scale that, according to the art historian Christopher John Murray, directs "the viewer's gaze towards their metaphysical dimension". The second paintings are from Ilya Yefimovich Repin (1844 - 1930) was a leading Russian painter and sculptor of the Peredvizhniki artistic school. "En Svane" (A Swan) is one of Edvard Grieg's most well known songs. It is one of six settings of poems by Norway's great poet and playwright, Henrik Ibsen, that comprise Grieg's Opus 25. In the Op. 5 songs, "Melodies of the Heart", on Danish texts by Hans Christian Anderson, Grieg inflected the German style he had learned in Leipzig with a more Northern character. These songs mark his first maturity as a song writer and won him his first wide notice in the Scandinavian countries.
