While we had known about this event for a month, we had no clue until today what was being announced. Earlier today we learned that it looked the Kyocera Echo, the first dual-screen Android phone, was the most likely candidate for the announcement, and it proved to be true. We had live coverage of the event, but nothing beats a good old recap. The new phone features dual 3.5-inch LCD WVGA screens that will make a total of 4.7-inches diagonally when both screens are open. You will be able to run separate apps in each screen, or one that spans both when you choose. If you want to use just one screen, you can use the unique hinge system to move one behind the other and it's out of your way whenever you want. Surprisingly the Echo doesn't have 4G speeds. Why, we have no idea, but this has to be the most surprising aspect of the phone over all. The Sprint Kyocera Echo took us by surprise on many levels. Never did we expect a company--not exactly infamous for smartphones--to do something as radical as bring a "first" to the industry. Before we tell you what we think of the concept of a dual-display Android phone, let's talk about the Echo and exactly how it works. First, let's go over the hardware. The phone, as you might expect, is a bit of a tank. It has sharp edges, a very boxy design, and a rather thick profile. That said, it's not much thicker than [name your favorite smartphone slider]. It's also a bit lighter than you would expect. The hinge that makes the first display flip next to the second display seems quite robust, and we're excited to see that it can work in multiple positions so that you can get either a side-by-side view, or a slightly tilted view, ideal for using the bottom display as a keyboards. In terms of specs, it's running on the (now becoming last-generation) Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz CPU with around 512MB of RAM and Android 2.2. The battery is a paltry 1300mAh or so, but you get two batteries when you buy this phone. In terms of availably and pricing, expect the Echo to hit for $199 on Sprint's 3G network in the Spring of 2011. Also included is a second battery, and a second battery charger, cause face it...two displays will consume twice as much power as one. How does it work? More Info Here: bit.ly How do two screens operate on an Android phone? On the Kyocera Echo, apps can run in one of three modes if you have both displays open. First, is tablet mode. After downloading a small app from the Market to enable this, you'll find that most apps will scale very well to both displays, filling up the entire 960x800 pixel space on both screens. Apps look much like they do on a Galaxy Tab in this view: text is sharp and crisp (since it's rendered on the OS level), while some images might look stretched or pixelated. The second mode isn't much of a mode: when you open an app that cannot work in tablet mode, like NYTimes app, the app will not fill up the displays, and just kind of hover in the center of the display. The most impressive use of the dual-display is for simul-task apps, of which there are seven (email, web, contacts, SMS, YouTube, phone, and gallery). These apps can literally run at the same time: one on the top screen, one on the bottom. These apps also allow for special split-screened views. For example, the email app, if stretched across both screens, can be set up to display your inbox on one display, and a message preview on the second. Or, in the case of the gallery app, you can have your gallery thumbnails on one screen, and the selected picture on another.
