The Hispanic Googlers Network in association with the Google Space Program and the AtGoogleTalks team present José M. Hernández who on his inspirational journey of achieving his dream of becoming a NASA astronaut after starting out as a migrant farm worker and applying to NASA for 12 years! He also shares his experience as part of the crew for the Space Shuttle mission STS-128 to the International Space Station. José has been featured in Oprah, 30-Minutes, and other programs. As a child, José worked alongside his family and other farm-workers in the fields of California, harvesting crops and moving from one town to another. He attended many schools and did not learn to speak English until he was 12 years old. It wasn't until he was 41 that NASA finally accepted him into the astronaut training program and later assigned him to the crew of Space Shuttle mission STS-128. José also served as Chief of the Materials and Processes branch of Johnson Space Center and previously developed equipment for full-field digital mammography at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of the Pacific in 1984 and a MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1986, where he was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 2006. TAKE AN INTERGALACTIC JOURNEY with the space age adventurer DILDANO (played by a 16 year old Cliff Carson) and featuring noted cinematographer BILL BURTON. Cinema Showcase host and Creative Loafing critic JIM WHALEY directed this little Sc-FI romp back in the 70's. If Barbarella and Flesh Gordon got together this would be their child. Completely inspired by the Roger Vadim / Jane Fonda cult classic with a bit of 2001 a Space Odyssey thrown in. For years I couldn't look at this film. I was told that it would be very cinematic and psychedelic which in some ways it was. Even at 16 I was embarrassed to be wearing that outfit but I was assured by a 28 year old JIM WHALEY that it would all work out. When he showed me the film I wanted to destroy it. I told him I wouldn't do anymore and that's where filming stopped. This is what survived. Looking back on it now, I'm sorry I didn't complete it. It's silly, gay and low budget, but kind of charming. i have to admit that it wasn't without some embarrassment that i recorded this video last night. with joseph arthur's shows being as intimate as they are, and my respecting him as much as i do, i felt doing so was impolite, to say the least--but after hearing the first few measures of this reflavored version of 'honey and the moon' (and having already seen everyone else snapping photos every other minute for the whole evening), i was torn. the new melody he lent the piece was so hauntingly beautiful, even in those first few measures - so much so, imho, that in the end my selfishness couldn't help but win out, and i proceeded to steal a piece of the evening for myself. ...later joseph would lend 'in the sun' a new soul as well. these two songs--both sung during his encore set (i do dare call it a set) way after his TRUE set's already amazing pieces 'black lexus'*, 'slide away', 'a smile that explodes', 'sunrise doll'**, and what i believe was a reengineering of 'take me back home', were some of the many, many highlights of the evening. myspace.com/josepharthur josepharthur.com * hands down the most amazing song of the night ** a new song that he played with the lonely astronauts. + Informações
