Music publisher Mickey Goldsen says of Earl Grant: "When Earl was growing up, Nat (King Cole) was a big star and he idolized him. When he started singing, he naturally sang like his idol, but he didn't make a conscious effort to be an imitator." It wasn't long before Decca grew keen to market Earl as their answer to Capitol's Nat Cole, and even allowed him to record an album in tribute to his hero. By 1957, Earl was beginning to gain important exposure on television and securing his own program, Checkerboard Square on LA's Channel 11. All that was needed was an original hit record, a unique signature tune to secure Grant national recognition. It finally came in 1958, although, ironically the raw material for Earl's best remembered vocal performance came perilously close to being squelched. " 'The End' came into my office in New York," recalls Mickey Goldsen. "I thought 'The End' was perfect for Earl, but Milt Gabler (the East Coast Decca A&R in New York) turned it down. In 1958, Earl was recording the theme song for 'Imitation Of Life,' along with some other things, and they needed a fourth tune to round out the session. I showed 'The End' to Bud Dant and he thought it was wonderful. I explained that Milt had rejected it, but Bud said, I'll write an arrangement for it right now, and we'll try and slip it through." Earl Grant was better known as one of the best jazz keyboardists and vocalists of his day, but his first single release after he signed with Decca Records was this pop tune, "The End", a song for which he will be best remembered.
