Christopher Tye must have been quite a character. His instrumental music is in a sense complex. The 21 in Nomine settings he made, are great and some have biblical subtitles. In this rhythmical complex piece, Trust is a good chosen subtitle, because you have to trust the other players of the consort in counting well. This version of the Western Wynde Mass is Christopher Tye's setting of the English Mass based on the same song melodythat John Taverner and John Sheppard used. It's not certain which of the three Masses was set first the setting by Taverner or this one by Tye. I'm inclined to think that Taverner's was the first as this setting complements it so well. Several things incline me to this view among them being: ? Tye presents the melody in the one part (alto) that Taaverner did not use. ? Tye mirrors Taverner's use of ascending ostinato in the Sanctus with a descending one. All of this makes me wonder if Tye wasn't completing a scheme agreed with Taverner. In places Tye's setting is reminiscent of music to be found in the Eton Choirbook and generally speaking it's less detailed than Taverner's. But Tye's seamless handling of the melody and the Mass' moments of sheer virtuosity such as the 'Benedictus' make it a very worthwhile piece of music.. + Informações
