Some guy named Frogger (I think that was his name... He wore a polyester suit while singing it-BAD move..) did this, and some pretty boy band too, nice, but unfeeling.. .. Neither of those versions had the impact of the original to me. So, I did my version a la the Doug Ashdown original version, and I also interspersed real Christmas Week footage of Winter In MY America.. It is a great, vastly underrated song. As with Air Supply's beautiful "Love and Other Bruises", Doug Ashdown's signature tune and sublime piece of pop: "Winter in America" is a gem from late 1976 and a Top 40 hit from early 1977. The two songs bring back memories of that summer, and for me, a 12 year old on the brink of adolescence and manhood, it was a tender and uncertain time, made more bearable and even joyous thanks to ballads like these. Although i loved to rock it out to Bon Scott and be a teeny bopper to Abba, I enjoyed our local artists, and took great pride when an Aussie scored big on our charts, and of course when they conquered the international markets. A piece of pop trivia, but this song was originally released as "Leave love enough alone" back in 1974, but it was not a hit until it was re-issued as "Winter in America" in late 1976, and although it spent some 7 months in the Top 100, it could not do better than #30 nationally, whilst doing better in Victoria, reaching the Top 15. Ashdown had relocated in the early 70's to Nashville, where he had some success as a collaborator penning hits for country artists. "Winter in America" gave Doug a hit in Holland, and cover versions since have reaped rewards, but at home, he is best loved for this sombre but elegant song, and I am proud to post a clip, Daveinprogress style for this classic track.
