Dion and the Belmonts were a leading American vocal group of the late 1950s. The group formed when Dion DiMucci joined The Belmonts - Carlo Mastrangelo, Freddie Milano, and Angelo D'Aleo - in late 1957. After an unsuccessful first single, the group were signed to Laurie Records. Their breakthrough came when «I Wonder Why» made # 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and the group appeared for the first time on the Dick Clark TV show. They followed it with the ballads «No One Knows» (#19) and «Don't Pity Me» (#40). This success won Dion and the Belmonts their first major tour in late 1958, with The Coasters, Buddy Holly and Bobby Darin, and this was followed up by the «Winter Dance Party» tour with Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. On 2 February 1959, after playing at the Surf Ballroom, Dion decided that he could not afford the $36 cost of a flight to the next venue. The plane crashed, and Holly and the other stars were killed. However, the tour continued, with Jimmy Clanton and Bobby Vee being added to the bill. In March 1959, Dion and the Belmonts' next single, «A Teenager in Love», was released, making #5 in the Billboard Hot 100 and #28 in the UK Singles Chart, and this was followed by an album, Presenting Dion and the Belmonts. Their biggest hit, «Where or When», was released in November 1959, and reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, in early 1960, Dion checked in to hospital for heroin addiction, a problem he had had since his mid-teens.. + Informações

Fred Milano (August 22, 1939 -- January 1, 2012) Original Member of Dion and the Belmonts, Dies at age 72. Fred Milano, one of the original members of Dion and the Belmonts, who wove his backup tenor tones into the musically seamless harmonies of 1950s and '60s hits like "A Teenager in Love" and "Where or When," died on Sunday at a hospital on Long Island. He was 72 and lived in Massapequa, NY Freddy Milano, as he was known, along with Angelo D'Aleo and Carlo Mastrangelo, were teenage buddies from the largely Italian neighborhood bordering Arthur Avenue in the Bronx when they began blending their doo-wop sounds on street corners and apartment stoops. Originally calling themselves the Belmonts (after the avenue on which Mr. Milano lived), they became Dion and the Belmonts in 1957 when Dion DiMucci joined as lead tenor. As "The Billboard Book of American Singing Groups" (1992) has stated, they went on to become "one of the best of the late '50s early '60s vocal groups." Born in the Bronx on Aug. 26, 1939, Mr. Milano was one of three children of Betty and Rocco Milano. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, the former Lynn Heitzner; a daughter, Tara Lesak; a son, Cal; and 10 grandchildren. Although Mr. Milano went on to become a paralegal and in recent years was a legal coordinator working with inmates at the Rikers Island jail in New York, he and other members of the Belmonts continued to perform at casinos and concert halls. By 1961, Dion Dimucci was being billed by himself although he was still singing with a back-up group. No longer were The Belmonts in the picture, but a group known as The Del-Satins were now working with Dion. When the time came for Dion to follow up his huge hit with "Runaround Sue", his record company chose a song called "The Majestic", but the disc jockeys around the nation liked the flip side of the recording better, "The Wanderer". And so did the rest of the nation as the song went all the way to #2 in December of 1961.. + Informações

It was originally released by the New York vocal group Dion And The Belmonts, in March 1959, reaching Nbr4 on the billboard hot 100 and spurning 4 covers in the British Charts, which were all in the top 20 simultaneously. Dion had just finished the Ill fated Winter Dance Party, along with Buddy Holly, Ritchie valens and the Big Bopper and was about to become one of the top recording stars in the world. He later paid tribute to Buddy, saying that he had been a huge influence on his life.
