WILHELM JERUSALEM, HELEN KELLER & THE DEAF BLIND INSTITUTE IN VIENNA 4.52 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 1795 exibições From 1890 till 1923 in Vienna real revolutionary research work for the education of the deaf and deaf blind was done by the Austrian Philosopher Wilhelm Jerusalem. And Jerusalem was in a permanent correspondence with the deaf blind writer and fighter for the human rights Helen Keller. Their correspondence will in the centre of a new documentary theatre. In 1913 Jerusalem was the co-founder of the first deaf blind institute in Vienna. And Helen Keller helped Jerusalem by establishing the institute with a letter. This letter is part of this video-clip in a production of ARBOS-Company for Music & Theatre(written by Herbert Gantschacher an edited by Erich Heyduck performed by Sabine Zeller in Austrian Sign Language and Markus Rupert). Wilhelm Jerusalem is today unfortunately nearly forgotten. He was born in 1854 at D?enice u Chrudimi as a son of Jewish parents. He never changed his religious identity by being baptized (which was essential in the Habsburg-Empire for any career, eg the career of the conductor and composer Gustav Mahler! The Anti-Semitism of the Habsburg-Empire climaxed a few days after the end of World War I. The Pius-Society -- today well-known by the denial of the Holocaust of the bishop Williamson -- knew already on the 25th of November 1918 the blame for the First World War, "that Jews and war as a virtually identical winner may designate. A cultured ear: why does listening to music matter? 89.12 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 1259 exibições Speakers: Rachel Halliburton; Professor Philip Hensher; Ivan Hewett; Tom Hutchinson; Karl-Erik Norrman. Chair: Sarah Boyes Today its often lamented that, though music permeates society, we no longer value the act of listening. Indeed, have we lost touch with how we listen? Why do we listen to music, and how does the way we listen change in different contexts? Whereas the composers of the past wrote pieces for specific reasons, such as dances, coronations or religious ceremonies, music today can seem strangely de-contextualised. Arguably, listening to music as an end in itself is actually quite a new idea, so does it really matter? Parents-to-be play Mozart to their fetuses in the womb, but this missionary zeal seems to wane when children are old enough to have tastes of their own. Commentators champion participation in music for the social benefits they claim it brings, while staying mute on how to listen and make value judgements. With worries over noise pollution, deafness caused by loud pop concerts, and even concerns that orchestras mustnt play Sibelius at full blast because it contravenes EU legislation on workplace safety, sound often seems something were supposed to protect ourselves from rather than relish. But can our listening be too safe in a more critical sense? Within our own listening worlds, do we embrace the diverse, new and challenging music that is increasingly available? Enthusiasts insist classical music is better than all the rest, but doesnt learning .... + Informações |

Beethoven - Pain, Art, Creativity (Ode to Joy) Immortal Beloved 7.90 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 8331 exibições "To play without passion is inexcusable!" ? Ludwig van Beethoven Beethoven had an abusive father who tried to exploit him as a child prodigy, an infatuation for women who were totally out of reach, a tragic deafness that defies imagination, the comical frequency in which he shifted residences in Vienna, his disillusionment with Napoleon, his unkempt appearance and lack of personal hygiene, a man with a vision of universal brotherhood increasingly withdrawing into himself. It's almost tempting to stop right there, as if his tormented life were reason enough to explain his exalted music, but the written record demands a closer look. Beethoven wrote a lot of letters and so did his friends, and in their 1999 book, "Manic Depression and Creativity," authors D Jablow Hershman and Dr Julian Lieb argue quite convincingly that the great composer had bipolar: "I joyfully hasten to meet death," Beethoven wrote as his deafness made itself apparent, "... for will it not deliver me from endless suffering?" This was no isolated event. An 1801 letter to a friend refers to a two-year-long depression. The next year he is begging Providence for "but one more day of pure joy." In 1813, he may have attempted suicide, disappearing and being found three days later. In 1816, he wrote: "During the last six weeks my health has been so shaky, so that I often think of death, but without fear ..." Ironically, his bipolar may have enabled him to survive deafness and loneliness. According to the book's .... + Informações |

LIBRIA (official) Album Preview 2011 3.12 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 343 exibições MARIANNA ALFIERI: electric & acoustic guitar, bass, piano, synth, electronics and all arrangements, vocals. FABIO PALOMBI: vocals MASSIMO MARANDINO: drums LIBRIA is the new project/band born from the mind of MARIANNA ALFIERI (Spectra Paris, Kirlian Camera, ex-Dark Lunacy), guitarist and composer, with the collaboration of FABIO PALOMBI (Nerve, Ritual of Rebirth) and MASSIMO MARANDINO (ex-Nerve, ex-Antropofagus). The original idea of LIBRIA was inspired by "Equilibrium", a Kurt Wimmer's film (2002). In the city-state of Libria, an absolute central power controls minds by the mean of Prozium, a drug which suppresses emotions. The "peace" and control obtained in this way is not so different from the way our society tries to keep us blind and deaf to the awareness of Truth. Our soul can be rescued by detaching from physical senses, and increasing the power of our mind, with strong discipline and will, without any drugs, just relying on our own mental forces. From these principles and ranging over reflections about death, life, spiritual growing and esoteric studies, the whole concept of LIBRIA was born. The first album was recorded. + Informações |

Stan Borys -- "...Pisze Pamietnik Artysty" Polish singer / actor / composer / poet Stan Borys is one of the most flamboyant and iconoclastic figures on the local scene with almost five decades of artistic achievements behind him. He was a founding member (with guitarist Tadeusz Nalepa) of the legendary group Blackout, the first Polish Rock group to incorporate lyrics written by a poet, in this case by Bogdan Loebl. Following his departure from Blackout the group morphed into the no less legendary Breakout, the great precursors of Blues-Rock in Poland, who continued to cooperate with Loebl as their exclusive lyricist, while Borys joined another group called Bizony. Since the early 1970s Borys embarked on a solo career, which continues to this very day. In 1975 Borys left Poland and immigrated to the US, but remained faithful to his deep cultural bonds with his native country. Since 2004 he returned to perform regularly in Poland, where he maintains a solid fan base, both as a singer and .... + Informações |

Famous Blind People 3.75 min. | 3.7368422 avaliação | 10162 exibições Slide 1: 10 Famous Blind People Who Changed the World Blindness is the complete lack of form and light perception. Most people believe that we see with our eyes. The fact is, however, that it is our brain that "perceives" what we think we see. These famous blind people have changed and shaped the world in many areas such as music, politics, science, art and sport because they refused to allow their lack of external light perception to quench or stifle their inner light. The world has been illuminated by their courage and talent. www.abisee.com Slide 2 Louis Braille Louis Braille - (January 4, 1809-January 6, 1852) Louis Braille accidentally stabbed himself in the eye, becoming blind from this injury. He was the inventor and designer of Braille writing which enables blind people to read from a series of organized bumps. Six dots. Six bumps. Six bumps in different patterns, like constellations, spreading out over the page. What are they? Numbers, letters, words. Who made this code? None other than Louis Braille, a French 12-year-old, who was also blind. And his work changed the world of reading and writing, forever. www.abisee.com Slide 3 Harriet Tubman Harriet Tubman - (1820/21-March 1913) Harriet Tubman was a slave throughout her youth who escaped to Canada but returned to the US where she helped bring hundreds of black slaves to safety in what was called the Underground Railroad. She received a cruel head wound which led to severe vision impairment and seizures. This did .... + Informações |

22. Democracy and Majority Rule (I) 50.67 min. | 0 avaliação | 4686 exibições Moral Foundations of Politics (PLSC 118) Professor Shapiro transitions today to the third and final section of the course, an in-depth look at democracy and its institutions. According to him, democracy is the most successful at delivering on the mature Enlightenment's twin promises to recognize individual rights as the ultimate political good and to base politics on some kind of commitment to objective knowledge. And interestingly, democracy as a tradition was not made famous by its champions, but rather by its critics. Today, Professor Shapiro guides the class through the writings of Plato, Tocqueville, Madison, and Dahl. He zeroes in specifically on American democracy and such concepts as tyranny of the majority, factionalism, and checks and balances. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Introduction and Last Class Recap 02:39 - Chapter 2. Democracy and Fear of Majority Tyranny 16:19 - Chapter 3. Madison and the Constitution: Majority Tyranny and Factions 38:03 - Chapter 4. Authors@Google: Justin Locke 49.83 min. | 4.6666665 avaliação | 3943 exibições Justin Locke, author and former bass player for the Boston Pops, visits Google Cambridge to discuss his book, "Principles of Applied Stupidity." From the book's description: "How often have you seen someone fail to move ahead in life because they were afraid of facing the unknown? How often have you seen someone endlessly seek guidance and expertise, and never actually act? The belief that we must become fully knowledgeable (and certified by others) BEFORE moving ahead is a great disincentive to success and personal fulfillment. In this new groundbreaking book (which, we admit, sounds like a gag) Justin Locke (author of 'Real Men Don't Rehearse') does the first actual study of the science, and benefits, of not knowing everything and not thinking too much. (Just one example: 'Principle #7: Ignorance of Difficulty = Optimism') The ability to overcome 'analysis paralysis' and take action in spite of not knowing all possible consequences in advance is key to innovation and success in both your business and in your personal life. This book will show you how to avoid the overly cautious 'let's-commission-a-study-first' thinking that bogs down so many people and projects. The word 'stupid' comes from the Latin 'stupidus,' meaning 'to be astonished,' and you may very well be astonished at the power, freedom and opportunity that will be yours after reading 'Principles of Applied Stupidity.'". + Informações |
