David Crosby in a rare solo performance of Joni Mitchell's "For Free" during his Fretboard Journal photo shoot. In the early 1960s, Martin wasn't making 12-string guitars. So Crosby had his Martin D-18 converted into a 12-string guitar by Bay Area musical instrument guru Jon Lundberg. The bridge placement moved and the old holes were covered with this oversized pickguard. This is the guitar that his signature model Martin D-12 was based on, though the new models from Martin have no need for the jumbo pickguard. Quite the show. The benefit for HepC at the Beacon Theater here in the Big Apple. Guests at this one were Natalie Cole, Crosby & Nash, Phil , Ron Holloway, Bill Evans, Danny Louis, Billy Gibbons and Devon Allman. Natalie Cole was amazing, David Crosby looked in great spirits, Phil was super on a day in between Furthur gigs, Bill Evans was great on Liz Reed, and Holloway also on the tunes he played. Last Friday night 12/9/11 my wife and I had the honor of watching David Crosby and the band Venice play a private show in a neighbors living room. This was a fund raiser for one of the band members child's elementary school. 70 people watched Venice accompanied by David Crosby harmonize on Crosby Stills Nash and Young classics such as Suite Judy Blue Eyes, Carry On. Woodstock & Long time coming. Before the show I had the opportunity to talk with Crosby and explained to him that in 1989 my girlfriend gave me a puppy Golder Retriever as a college graduation gift. I had a hard time naming him but after much thought I asked my friend Chris for a suggestion- he looked me straight in the eyes and said "If he was my dog there would be no doubt, his name would be Crosby" well it stuck. David said to me after I told him that story "your friend has some serious problems" I replied, "All my friends do and come to think of it so do yours!" we had a chuckle and he excused himself to warm up. This show was incredible.... to sum it up I will quote my friend that we invited with his wife to be our guests. He said "Not many times a has concert brought me to tears, this was one of those occasions. Truly a treasured memory". + Informações

Some excellent reference material on the PERRO sessions: www.philzone.com "The Mountain Song - 1" (5' 11"): This is the first of several attempts at what would eventually become a slice of classic Airmachine. However, at this stage, the only fragment of the song they had to work with was the line "Gonna make the mountains be my home" and the chord-sequence that supported it, so it's quite amazing that from such a meager base Kantner, Slick, Crosby and Garcia (possibly with Casady and Hart) are able to conjure 23 minutes of undulating beauty. There's a banjo featured prominently, plus two acoustic guitars and Grace's distinctive piano. The banjo is Paul K.& the touches are so accomplished, it's Kantner on the five- string with Garcia and Crosby on guitars. Surprisingly, there's no trace of Paul's vocal - though the other three take care of that handsomely enough. Early on, it's Jerry singing the line in orthodox fashion, while Grace embellishes with some improvised lyrics around the theme. Then Crosby takes Grace's place and scats around Jerry's vocal for a while. As you'd expect, the playing is loose and slightly tentative on this first version, but no less affecting for all that. "The Mountain Song - 2" (5' 17"): Grace is back providing an improvised descant to Jerry's straight vocal at the start here, and she's singing about the sky and the river as he eulogizes the mountains. After a minute or so, Crosby introduces his scat and Grace leaves the chorus to concentrate on .... + Informações

By @SteveSilberman (Twitter) This week, on the 500th broadcast of the Grateful Dead Hour, David Gans will be playing one of my favorite pieces of music in the universe, David Crosby's "Kids and Dogs." It's a recording with some interesting history to it, so I thought I'd share what I know. I'm amused to see the song described in the soon-to-be-published Deadhead Taper's Compendium as "widely regarded as the one that got away." As Gans said to me, "You're not that wide!" Kids and Dogs has been a personal obsession of mine for almost 15 years, and to think of even just the title of it being "widely" known among Deadheads tickles me endlessly. Once, it was an almost completely unknown and forgotten song. The version David will be playing is a duet between Jerry Garcia and David Crosby, recorded at Wally Heider's Studio C by Stephen Barncard in 1970, probably in November or December (Stephen may well have exact information on this). It's a ragged but heavenly version of a sublime tune that Crosby wrote around the same time he was writing Tamalpais High, Song with No Words, Laughing - all those great tunes that ended up on his first solo album, If I Could Only Remember My Name (the album it "got away" from). The earliest version I know is from March 28, 1968, recorded at Hollywood Recorders, LA, by Paul Rothchild and Bruce Botnick. Some excellent reference material on the PERRO sessions: www.philzone.com "Loser" (8' 41"): The timing includes several restarts and Jerry explaining - and indeed demonstrating - the chord progression to his colleagues, who could well be Crosby, Lesh and Papa John*. There's certainly a violin in here and it works especially well, counterpointing the three guitars most effectively. DETAILS On 8/23/91 a copy of the several PERRO reels were compiled onto a DT 120 DAT on request by Paul to Graham (since the tapes where kept in the latter's vault) for a copy. When the Crosby, Stills & Nash box-set was being put together, some mystery reels were found. All of the CSNY tape collection was brought in to one place for the first time, including personal collections of Barncard, Joel Bernstein, Nash and Stills. One of the PERRO tapes had a small pipe with weed in it and somebody smoked it! It was still good. The material on the PERRO tapes was very interesting, but had nothing to do with CSNY. There were 4 reels of 2 track mixes made in 1971 during the sessions (obviously there is more that has never been mixed). The tapes were put into storage in Nash's vault. Paul called Nash in 1992 and requested DATs of those tapes. This was the first time they had been outside of the CSNY organization. They were copied at A&M Post Production audio and my personal DAT was made at that time.
