Eccentric Rag Condon 1946 Eddie Condon and his friend Pete Pesci opened a jazz night club called "Eddie Condon's" on 47 West Third Street in the "Village" in New York City in December 1945. Pete and Eddie kept the club running until 1958. A popular Columbia film shorts interviewer Danton Walker would report on nightclubs and here is an interview with Eddie in his club followed by the band playing Eccentric Rag. Yeah folks, this is a 10" VINYL DJ (white label "RCA Victor Record Prevue - coming attractions") copy of the 12" record originally issued on RCA Victor's green "Hot Jazz Classic" label, number 40-4000. Found this beauty in an Atchison, Kansas used book store for 50 cents back in 1995 - certainly the best 78 I've ever snagged for that price. "Basin Street Blues" Words and Music by Spencer Williams Performed by The Louisiana Rhythm Kings Recorded June 11, 1929, New York Personnel: Red Nichols - trumpet Jack Teagarden - trombone, vocal Pee Wee Russell - clarinet Bud Freeman - tenor sax Joe Sullivan - piano Dave Tough - drums Between 1926 and 1932, Nichols made an enormous number of recordings under such names as the Five Pennies, the Charleston Chasers, The Red Heads, The Wabash Orchestra, Red and Miff's Stompers and the Louisiana Rhythm Kings. Nichols lead larger bands on some records and headed the orchestras for the shows "Strike up the Band" and "Girl Crazy." Teagarden's vocal on Basin Street Blues gave him a permanent lien on the number, and it was to remain one of those most requested of him for the rest of his life in addition to "The Stars Fell on Alabama.". + Informações

If I were to take a 2nd stab at it I'd probably play less busy during the melody/section features and play fewer figures (except the big ensemble hits and accents). The drummers primary role 1st and foremost (ALONG WITH the bass/rhythm section as a team) is to play time/groove--something that is sometimes overlooked! In swing/Big Band music, the more fancy fiddly crap a drummer plays, the worse-off the music is and the sillier he/she sounds. Record yourself and assess what you're playing often--you won't regret it and your bandmates will notice a difference. Listen to the greats like: Mel Lewis, Sonny Payne, Butch Miles, Budy Rich, Louie Bellson, Jeff Hamilton, Jon Riley...and don't forget Papa Jo Jones, Dave Tough, many others...from all generations. They groove and propel the band like crazy, with the fancy soloing etc. as 'icing on the cake'.. + Informações

Here is a feature from 1929 of cornettist Red Nichols and his Five Pennies Red Nichols had a long time musical relationship with Miff Mole. Is this Miff, and when the If is yes why didn't he got featured? I was informed by yvesfrancois it was Herb Taylor. This is probably the earliest film of Pee Wee Russell on clarinet. Who is the drummer? Dave Tough, Vic Burton or Chauncey Morehouse. Eddie Condon plays on a mandoline guitar as well on banjo. Of course Eddie switched to 4 string tenor guitar. Why? Eddie"s quote: "This all came of a conversation I had with [John] Steinbeck once when we were standing in a men's room somewhere. Steinbeck asked me why I didn't play the banjo any more and I told him that went out with the high-button shoes." Eddie had more famous quotes: "The boppers flat their fifths. We consume ours."
