It was directed by Lewis Milestone and written by Lillian Hellman. The film starred Anne Baxter, Dana Andrews, Walter Huston, Walter Brennan and Erich von Stroheim. The music was written by Aaron Copland, the lyrics by Ira Gershwin, and the cinematography was by James Wong Howe. The film also marked the debut of Farley Granger. The film is about the resistance of Ukrainian villagers, through guerrilla tactics, against the German invaders of Ukraine. The film was an unabashedly pro-Soviet propaganda film at the height of the war. In the 1950s it was criticised for this reason and it was recut to remove the idealized portrayal of Soviet collective farms at the beginning and to include references to the 1956 Hungarian Uprising. In June 1941 Ukrainian villagers are living in peace. As the schools break up for vacation, a group of friends decide to travel to Kiev for a holiday. To their horror they find themselves attacked by German aircraft, part of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. Eventually their village itself is occupied by the Nazis. Meanwhile men and women take to the hills to form partisan militias. The full brutality of the Nazis is revealed when a German doctor (Erich von Stroheim) uses the village children as a source of blood for transfusions into wounded German soldiers. Dana Andrews first arrived in Hollywood from Texas as a classically trained opera singer but kept that fact well hidden: He wasn't interested in getting typecast as a second Nelson Eddy. A tribute to one of the most underrated and underappreciated actors of the 40s and 50s, Dana Andrews (1909-1992). He played many "average Joe" roles in his early career and was often the second male lead, the guy who "didn't get the girl", until he saw the opportunity to play the leading man in 20th Century Fox's production "Laura" (1944). While he knew it wouldn't be considered his greatest acting role, he knew that it would make him a star. A talented singer, he never used his real singing voice in films, keeping his vocal talents a secret, fearing that he would be typecast as a singer/actor and it would end his career. Interestingly enough, his contract was shared between Samuel Goldwyn and Fox, and this enabled him to go back and forth between studios and undoubtedly gave him opportunity to play a variety of roles. The 101 Strings Orchestra performs the romantic tune "Someone To Watch Over Me" to photos of Dana Andrews (1909-1992) and Gene Tierney (1920-1991). They appeared in five films together, "Tobacco Road", "Belle Starr" (both 1941), "Laura" (1944), "The Iron Curtain" (1948) and "Where The Sidewalk Ends" (1950). Although not often remembered as a screen team, they certainly costarred frequently and there always seemed to have been a watchable chemistry between them. Tierney's vulnerability and striking beauty seems to bring out the tenderness in some of Andrew's toughest characters. Offscreen they had a professional friendship and great respect for each other. Andrews battled alcoholism (a fight he eventually won), while Tierney suffered from mental illness. Both would overcome these problems and would share them with the public at a time when such subjects were not discussed openly. Dana's eldest son died young in 1964, while Gene's first daughter was born mentally disabled and had to be placed in an institution. Tierney passed away after battling emphyesema in November 1991, and the following January, Andrews died of pneumonia .... + Informações
