After almost ten years as a band and four albums to its credit, Cuff the Duke has made ... a concept record. The Toronto roots rockers wouldn't call it that (there are no suites about dragons here), but there it is, 10 tracks on a theme that flow like a film, like a good book, one filled with emotional highs and lows, plot twists, and universal truths. Morning Comes is a story about change, about confronting loss, about -- as one track calls it -- "Standing on the Edge" and having the courage to look across to an unknown future on the other side. "I think it's about reaching that point in your life when you're not exactly young anymore but you're certainly not old," says vocalist Wayne Petti. "Over the last couple of years I've had friends and family who passed away and you realize that there is a lot of this happening now, losing people. I felt I needed to address this emotion that happens to everybody, ...when you get off track and you need to rebound from it." Cuff the Duke has approached these heavy themes not with mopiness or despair but with strength, like men raised on John Wayne and Bruce Springsteen. (Which they were.) Nor is Morning Comes a collection of sad songs. Rather, some of the most infectious pop and upbeat rock the band has crafted yet. *edit* Just noticed the band embedded this video on the Audio/Video section of their website (www.cufftheduke.ca). Cool! Cuff the Duke were joined on stage in Halifax by Mike O'Neill of The Inbreds for this song and one other at the Paragon Theatre the night of October 30th, 2009. Sadly I didn't get the second one recorded, I was a bit miffed at some guy barging up to the front blocking a good chunk of my view to the left part way through this one and so stopped recording after it was done instead of continuing on, something which on later reflection (and Wayne Petti's remarks of hoping it would get to youtube...) A few tidbits for you all: I don't know what that white box is to Greg's right (our right, his left!) but I definitely remember seeing it with him at all the BR shows. Perhaps someone who is more musically knowledgable than I could clue us in as to what it is called. Also: The white sheet of paper on the amp behind the "mysterious white object" is a set list from a BR show. No idea why or how it got there. Someone may have casually placed it there as they unpacked the gear... or someone is testing us! Will the groupies swipe the set list, or won't they? :p Lastly, the vase behind Greg holds three yellow roses. Yellow roses symbolize friendship. Did you all know that? ;). + Informações
