"Ohio" is a protest song written and composed by Neil Young in reaction to the Kent State shootings of May 4, 1970, and performed by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. It was released as a single, backed with Stephen Stills "Find the Cost of Freedom," peaking at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100. Although a live version of the song was included on the group's 1971 double album Four Way Street, the studio versions of both songs did not appear on an LP until the group's compilation So Far was released in 1974. The song also appeared on the Neil Young compilation album Decade, released in 1977. On May 4, l970 members of the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd of Kent State University demonstrators, killing four and wounding nine Kent State students. The impact of the shootings was dramatic. The event triggered a nationwide student strike that forced hundreds of colleges and universities to close. HR Haldeman, a top aide to President Richard Nixon, suggests the shootings had a direct impact on national politics. In The Ends of Power, Haldeman (1978) states that the shootings at Kent State began the slide into Watergate, eventually destroying the Nixon administration. Beyond the direct effects of the May 4th, the shootings have certainly come to symbolize the deep political and social divisions that so sharply divided the country during the Vietnam War era. Written before their famous song "Ohio", but considered the most appropriate song to add to the flip-side of "Ohio" when that single came out on 45-rpm. A haunting ballad that could actually be applied to those who lost their lives at Kent State as well as all those who died in the Vietnam War. The saddest part is that many of those on both sides were the same age from the same generation. I think the most appropriate quote that came out of all that era was, "America eats its young!" "The Cost of Freedom" and "Ohio" will always remain as anthems for that generation and time.. + Informações

Crosby, Stills Nash and Young came together in 1969 each of the members of this new harmony infused group had previous experiences in other popular bands, David Crosby had been kicked out of The Byrds Graham Nash had been ousted out of the Hollies for butting heads with Hollies lead singer Alan Clarke, Stephen Stills and Neil Young came from the dissolution of Buffalo Springfield. Out of all these breakups came one of the most potent supergroups of the early seventies who recorded one of the most anticipated sophmore albums of all time. The album called Dejavu is a strange mix of pschydelic sounds, catchy country rock , and ear shattering hard along with softer more melodic rock. The album also has a theme of optimism as well as a need for social revolution a notion that was prevalent in the latter half of the sixties and was carried over into the seventies by artist such as Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell and of course the band whom I am referring to right now Crosby Stills Nash and Young. 1. Carry On- Melodic four part harmonies " carry" ( pardon the pun) this song about learning to cope with the hardships of life and learning to see past your self imposed prejudices of people and love everybody for who they are .
