Cotton Pickers Cotton Pickers "I WISH I COULD SHIMMY LIKE MY SISTER KATE" (1922)
2.92 min. | 4.826087 avaliação | 8452 exibições

"I Wish I could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate" Words and Music by AJ Piron Performed by The Cotton Pickers Brunswick 2338 Recorded September 1922, New York Personnel: Phil Napoleon - trumpet Miff Mole - trombone Jimmy Lytell - clarinet Frank Signorelli - piano John Cali - banjo John Helleberg - tuba Jack Roth - drums The Cotton Pickers was Brunswick's chosen generic name for its purveyors of blues fox trots and throughout the 1920s the name was used on a considerable number of issues, even though the range of repertoire broadened and the personnel metamorphosed several times. The anchorman of the first generation to bear the Cotton Pickers name was trumpeter Phil Napoleon, a legitimately trained musician with a powerful, clean (if at times unadventurous) style, and who was well known to recording executives through his work for bandleader Sam Lanin and with the Original Memphis Five. This song romanticized a ragtime dance craze popularized by Gilda Gray. The "shimmy" involved frantic, sensous gyrations of the hips and shoulders, personifying the madcap exuberance and permissive morals of the Jazz Age. It inspired several additional songs, including "Shimee Town" (featured in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1919), "Sim-Me-King Blues" (recorded by Mamie Smith in 1921), and the New Orleans Rhythm Kings' "Shim-Me-Sha-Wabble" (1923). The first recording of "I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate" was made by a very young Bessie Smith. The singer, then unknown, used the song as an .... + Informações

McKinney's Cotton Pickers were a United States jazz band founded in Detroit in 1926 by William McKinney. McKinney expanded his Synco Septet to ten pieces. Cuba Austin took over for McKinney early on drums. In 1927 Don Redman left Fletcher Henderson's orchestra to become the Cotton Pickers' musical director, and he assembled a band which rivalled Henderson's and Duke Ellington's. Aiding Redman with arrangements and rehearsals with the band was the talented trumpeter-arranger John Nesbitt. Between 1927 and 1931, they were one of the most popular African-American bands. Many of their records for Victor were best sellers. In 1931 Redman left to form his own band and was replaced by Benny Carter. The Cotton Pickers disbanded in 1934, unable to make money during the Depression. Manager of the band was Jean Goldkette. McKinneys Cotton Pickers - Nobody's Sweetheart (1928). + Informações

McKINNEYS COTTON PICKERS play "Zonky" on Victor 38118, recorded 2-3-1930. The original policy of the band was to play hot numbers, but once in New York, with a recording contract from Victor that was demanding of all its artists a more commerical approach to work, the Cotton Pickers included a repertoire of the better popular hits of the day, giving them a rich and rare treatment, with warm section work and beautifully executed soli . This recording, which is actually the b-side to one of those numbers (If I Could Be With You One Hour Tonight,) is one of their more jazzy numbers. Dave Wilborn gives us this classic 1920's vocal with lots 'o pep! Played on my 1926 Victor Credenza, with an un-restored Orthophonic reproducer and Tungs-tone stylus. ENJOY! And remember- USE A NEW STEEL NEEDLE EVERY PLAY!. + Informações

"BABY, WON'T YOU PLEASE COME HOME" McKinney's Cotton Pickers, Don Redman, arranger and director. Vocal by George Thomas Recorded July 28, 1930 Personnel: Don Redman - alto sax and vibraphone George Thomas - vocal and Alto sax Prince Robinson - tenor sax and clarinet Edward Cuffee - trombone Todd Rhodes - piano Dave Wilbourn - banjo Billy Taylor - tuba Cuba Austin -drums Langston Curl, Joe Smith, John Nesbitt - trumpets Although McKinney's Cotton Pickers is properly regarded as a midwest band, its growth was traceable to a number of sources. In 1924, which was about the time Don Redman joined Flecher Henderson's Orchestra in New York, McKinney's was a band that depended only partly on musicianship. Taking its name from William McKinney, a former circus drummer, it went in for vaudeville, for comic effects and musical tomfoolery. This was not unusual for bands of the time. That jazz had to be "sold" was still a widely held opinion. But jazz was already on its way and McKinney's was destined to become one of the important bands on the 1920's, linking the early jazz of bands that worked usually without orchestrations and with very simple instrumentation, to those that came later-- the name bands of the Thirties in which an instrumentation of seven brass, four reed and four rhythm instruments was generally the minimum. Don Redman was the moving spirit of McKinney's Cotton Pickers. It was while he was musical director of the group, between 1928 and 1931, that it became famous .... + Informações

CHORUS 1: When I was a little bitty baby My mama would rock me in the cradle, In them old cotton fields back home; CHORUS 2: It was down in Louisiana, Just about a mile from Texarkana, In them old cotton fields back home. CHORUS 3: Oh, when them cotton bolls get rotten You can't pick very much cotton, In them old cotton fields back home. "Cotton Fields" is a song written by blues musician Huddie Ledbetter, better known as Lead Belly. It has been recorded by Bill Monroe, Teresa Brewer, Harry Belafonte (1958), The Highwaymen (1961) (Billboard pop #13), Johnny Cash (1962), Johnny Mann Singers (1962), Buck Owens (1963), Odetta (1963), Ace Cannon (1963), The Seekers (1964), New Christy Minstrels (1965), Trini Lopez (1960s), Unit 4 + 2 (1965), The Robert De Cormier Singers (1966), The Beach Boys (1969-1970),Wings & Paul McCartney - 1970s, Creedence Clearwater Revival (1969), Frantic Flintstones, and Buckwheat Zydeco (1994). The Cotton Pickers -- Mishawaka Blues, Fox Trot (Rose, Short, Straight), Brunswick 1925 (USA) NOTE: The Cotton Pickers were the Brunswick studio white band, the membership of which was fluid. Brunswick Records used the moniker to put out several sides of smaller band dance music, usually blues and foxtrots "imitating" the sound of the Southern black combos. Initially, the band featured trumpeter Phil Napoleon and saxophonist Bennie Krueger, whose arrangements sounded "black" to Northern audiences, yet after 1924 the Cotton Pickers were a completely different band fronted by Frank Trumbauer with trombonist Miff Mole, whose style was less Dixie and more pop. The Mishawaka Blues side seems to belong to the "Trumbauer era". The Cotton Pickers are often mistaken for McKinney's Cotton Pickers - which is a completely different orchestra.. + Informações
