I live in a city full of stray dogs and I have rules I try to stick to about bringing (or more correctly NOT bringing) street dogs home with me. But something about Lily; trailing shyly behind me as I walked home - even after I shooed her away several times - really got to me. My husband and I have one dog of our own and although our lifestyle doesn't allow us to own a second dog we enjoy taking on a foster dog when we can. Fostering Lily was a no brainer. She has the sweetest, most tolerant temperament of any dog I have ever known. She is also very smart and I have had a lot of fun teaching her little tricks. She is much quicker than her foster brother and will jump on him and poke him playfully in his face with her nose to get him to play with her. She loves having her belly and her back scratched and she will collapse into a puddle of delight, back legs twitching spasmodically, anytime we scratch her itches. Her antics make us all laugh. Lily has brought so much joy into our house and I have truly enjoyed having her in my life, but I am not a permanent home for her and that is what she really needs. I am so grateful to Michelle Dunlap, director of Phoenix Animal Rescue, for taking Lily into her adoption program. I never could have considered helping Lily without Michelle's support. I might have found Lily, but Michelle saved her life. We've all heard about the medicines and treatments that come out of exotic places like the rain forest in Brazil, but we have no shortage of plants in Utah, each with their own unique chemical properties. The corn lily is considered a weed that is somewhat toxic, but a bio-tech company believes it may be the key to treating the deadliest form of cancer. In the mountains of northern Utah there exists a weed that grows fast in the wet spring meadows. "The Forest Service had a program 10 or 20 years ago trying to eradicate the material," said David Mann of Infinity Pharmaceuticals. It is called Veratrum californicum, but most people know it as the corn lily or cow cabbage. Animals generally won't eat it and it spreads quickly. It also contains a toxic chemical that might help beat pancreatic cancer. "The complex nature of the chemistry is amazing," said Mann. Dr. Mann is associate director of biological chemistry for the company. He said Utah's corn lily species contains some of the highest concentrations cyclopemene, the raw material for the drug they are developing. The company is studying the entire plant, but they already know most of the chemical is held in the root. "We come in with a nursery lifter that actually lifts the plant out of the ground," said Dr. Joseph McPherson, vice president of facilities and operations He spends several weeks a year in Utah finding locations mostly around Sanpete county and making arrangements for the harvest.
