Constance "Connee" Boswell (December 3, 1907 - October 11, 1976) was an American female vocalist born in Kansas City, Missouri but raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. With her sisters, Martha and Helvetia "Vet" Boswell, she performed in the 1930's as The Boswell Sisters and became a highly influential singing group during this period via recordings and radio. Connee herself is widely considered one of the greatest jazz female vocalists and was a major influence on Ella Fitzgerald. In 1936, Connee's sisters retired and Connee continued on as a solo artist (having also recorded solos during her years with the group). The Boswells came to be well known locally while still in their early teens, making appearances in New Orleans theaters and radio. They made their first recordings for Victor Records in 1925. They did not attain national attention, however, until they moved to New York City in 1930 and started making national radio broadcasts. After a few recordings with Okeh Records, they made numerous recordings for Brunswick Records from 1931-1935. In 1935, the sisters had a #1 hit with "The Object of My Affection", the biggest of twenty top 20 records they would enjoy. In 1936, the group signed to Decca Records and after just three releases called it quits (the last recording was February 12, 1936). Connee Boswell continued to have a successful solo career as a singer for Decca. She had changed the spelling of her name from Connie to Connee, reputedly because it made it .... + Informações

With her sisters, Martha and Helvetia "Vet" Boswell, she performed in the 1930's as The Boswell Sisters and became a highly influential singing group during this period via recordings and radio. Connee (or Connie) herself is widely considered one of the greatest jazz female vocalists and was a major influence on Ella Fitzgerald. In 1936, all the sisters got married, and Vet and Martha retired. Connie, on the other hand, even though she cut solo albums while with the group, directed her entire focus on her solo career. This collection represents some of her guest appearances in various old time radio shows including Bing Crosby, Command Performance, Good News, Kraft Music Hall, Mail Call, and Screen Guild Theater. "The Nearness Of You" was originally written by Ned Jones and Hoagy Carmichael for the movie "Romance In The Dark" (1937) with Gladys Swarthout and John Boles. This Snayder Telescript was shot in Connee Boswell's Manhattan Apartment. She made a series of these shorts (the midpoint between "soundies" and MTV) with her dog Rebel. She reprised her 1937 hit "Martha" for this production. Connee Boswell was the first to "swing the classics" and paved the way for everyone from Bea Wain and Larry Clinton to Bobby Darrin. Just another one of the trends that began with a Boswell, but has somehow gotten lost with the passage of time.. + Informações

"Look for the Silver Lining" (Connee Boswell)

Connee Boswell at the peak of her career in this upbeat and positive-minded number from Jerome Kern and Buddy DeSylva's 1920 show, "Sally". LOOK FOR THE SILVER LINING Look for the silver lining When e'er a cloud appears in the blue. Remember some where the sun is shining, And so the right thing to do, Is make it shine for you. A heart, full of joy and gladness, Will always banish sadness and strife. So always look for the silver lining, And try to find the sunny side of life. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ More from Wiki on the show, "Sally", in which the song first appeared: Sally is a musical comedy with music by Jerome Kern, lyrics by Clifford Grey and book by Guy Bolton (inspired by the 19th century show, Sally in our Alley), with additional lyrics by Buddy De Sylva, Anne Caldwell and PG Wodehouse. It was originally produced by Florenz Ziegfeld, opening on December 21, 1920 at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway. It ran for 570 performances, which was one of the longest runs on Broadway up to that time. By the time it closed in 1924, it would prove to be among the top five money makers of the 1920s. The show was designed as the musical comedy debut of Marilyn Miller, a 22-year old Ziegfeld Follies girl. Miller would continue to be a star on Broadway until her untimely death in 1936. Kern, Bolton, and Wodehouse had collaborated on a number of musical comedies at the Princess Theatre. The story combined the innocence of these earlier "Princess musicals" with the lavishness of .... + Informações

The Best! - Connee Boswell - Smoke Gets in Your Eyes : TopVideos.com.br The Best! - Connee Boswell - Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

My favorite version of one of my favorite songs "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" is a show tune written by American composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Otto Harbach for their 1933 operetta Roberta. The original Broadway production opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre on November 18, 1933, and ran for 295 performances. It starred Tamara Drasin (billed as Tamara), Bob Hope, George Murphy, Lyda Roberti, Fred MacMurray, Fay Templeton, Ray Middleton (billed as Raymond E. Middleton), and Sydney Greenstreet. It was originally recorded by Gertrude Niesen, on 13 October 1933 on the Victor label 24454. It was performed by Irene Dunne for the 1935 film adaptation, costarring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Randolph Scott. One of the finest jazz singers of the 1930's, Connee Boswell (who was always cited by Ella Fitzgerald as her main early influence) originally rose to fame as a member of the Boswell Sisters, one of the premiere jazz vocal groups. Connee contracted polio or had a spinal cord injury due to an accident as an infant and always used a wheelchair although her disability was usually well covered up on stage. Early on she played cello, piano, alto sax and trombone but unfortunately never recorded on any instruments. The three Boswell Sisters (with Martha on piano and Vet on violin) did have an opportunity to perform with the New Orleans Philharmonic but soon they gave up playing their instruments (except for Martha on piano) and chose to work on developing as a vocal group. Renowned theatre organist Gaylord Carter swings on the Hammond electric organ as he accompanies the marvelous Connee Boswell (of the Boswell Sisters) singing "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" in this clip from the 1937 MGM short "Sunday Night At The Trocadero". Note: The original soundtrack, as it survives today, is dreadfully bad. This clip has been filtered and evened out to remove noise and improve the overall sound. One astute viewer pointed out that this organ may be the Hammond model "BC", and not the original "A". The console case does seem to be the larger version. The "BC" went into production in 1936, so could have been the one used here.. + Informações

They made their first recordings for Victor Records in 1925, which included "Cryin' Blues" where Connee is featured singing in the style of her early influence, the African American singer Mamie Smith. The Boswell Sisters became stage professionals that year when they were tapped to fill in for an act at New Orleans' Orpheum Theatre. They received an invitation to come to Chicago and perform in 1928 and honed their act on the Western Vaudeville Circuit. When their tour ended they traveled to San Francisco. The hotel that had been recommended had a less than savory reputation, and the man at the desk suggested that these three young ladies might be better off in another hotel. That man, Harry Leedy, would later become their manager on a .... + Informações

Recorded in 1935. One of the finest jazz singers of the 1930's, Connee Boswell (who was always cited by Ella Fitzgerald as her main early influence) originally rose to fame as a member of the Boswell Sisters, one of the premiere jazz vocal groups. Although they recorded both "Nights When I'm Lonely" and Connee's solo number "I'm Gonna Cry" in 1925, the Boswells did not begin catching on (and recording regularly) until late-1930. During 1931-36 the Boswell Sisters became quite popular on radio and in concert, making occasional appearances in films (most notably 1932's The Big Broadcast). During the same period, Connee Boswell (who worked out most of the Boswell's surprising arrangements) occasionally recorded solo sides of her own. When Vet and Martha got married and decided to retire from singing in 1936, Connee (who also was married during the same period) officially launched her own solo career. Although she never broke through to .... + Informações
