Se formaron en 1985 después de que el cantante Jimmy Somerville dejara la banda Bronski Beat para crear el grupo con el músico Richard Coles. Fueron reclutados por el bajo Dave Renwick el cual también había tocado antes en Bronski Beat. Somerville fue conocido por su forma de cantar con voz de falsete, y fue considerado abiertamente homosexual.
