On 15 May 1929 a small contingent of the Paul Whiteman Orchestra recorded two sides for Columbia - "What A Day" and "Alabammy Snow". The record was issued under the pseudonym "The Mason-Dixon Orchestra" no doubt as an "in-joke" because the catalogue number of the record was 1861. Okeh (a subsidiary label of Columbia) always issued recordings with a similar personnel under saxophonist Frank Trumbauer's name. It is rumoured that "Tram" once mentioned that cornetist Bix Beiderbecke did not record with his orchestra for Okeh after the session of two weeks earlier, 30 April 1929. But with a slightly different personnel under another name and for another label, this one-off session may have escaped Tram's memory and Bix recorded in the same studio on the day after this session. The discographies have always named three trumpeters/cornetists for this date, Charlie Margulis, Harry Goldfield and Andy Secrest, all three Whiteman regulars and the latter known for his ability to sound like Bix, who was being featured less and less and was to leave the band permanently in September. But at the time of the Mason-Dixon recording date, Bix was still very much with Whiteman and it would have been logical if he was present; he had done a radio show with the band the day before and recorded in the same Columbia studio with them the day after. Still, in the discographies and books about Bix, it has always been accepted that he was not present and that everything on this record that sounds .... + Informações

Chick Bullock (16 Sept.1908 - 15 Sept.1981) was a popular American jazz and dance band vocalist, most active in the 30s. He recorded some 500 tunes over the course of his career. Bullock was mostly associated with the ARC group of labels (Melotone, Perfect, Banner, Oriole, Romeo). ------------ ARC, the American Record Company, also referred to as American Record(ing) Corporation, or as ARC Records, was an United States based record company. It resulted from the merger in July 1929 of the Cameo Record Corporation: (Cameo Records, Lincoln Records and Romeo Records); the Pathé Phonograph and Radio Corporation: (the US branch of Pathé Records and Perfect Records); the Plaza Music Company: (Banner Records, Domino Records, Jewel Records, Oriole Records, and Regal Records); and the Scranton Button Company, the parent company of Emerson Records (and the company who pressed most of the above labels). Louis G. Sylvester, the former head of Scranton, became president of the new company located at 1776 Broadway in Manhattan, New York City. In October 1929, Herbert Yates, head of Consolidated Film Industries took control of ARC. In the following years, the company was very involved in a depressed market, buying failing labels at bargain prices to exploit their catalogue. In December 1931 Warner Brothers leased Brunswick Records, Vocalion Records and associated companies to ARC. In 1932, ARC was king of the 3 records for a dollar market, selling 6 million units, twice as much as RCA .... + Informações

Smith Ballew with The Columbia Photo Players - Smith Ballew with The Columbia Photo Players - "What Is Life Without Love"

Recorded in New York, November 2, 1929 The Columbia Photo Players was a recording pseudonym for Ben Selvin's studio orchestra for Columbia Records. This is a very nice song, I think - and it has some nice jazzy passages after the vocal. I actually purchased this record at an estate sale on the same street as the house where Smith Ballew lived for a number of years after he retired from show business and settled in Fort Worth. The collector who passed away about 15 years ago and whose estate was being liquidated had an entire box of records labeled "Smith Ballew vocals." The collector and Ballew lived on that same street during an overlapping period - so I suspect it is possible and even likely the two were acquainted.. + Informações

Leah West - Leah West - "Winter Wonderland" performed at the Powerhouse Theatre
2.05 min. | 0 avaliação | 11792 exibições

www.leahwest.com Leah West sings "Winter Wonderland" which was written in 1934 by Felix Bernard (music) and Richard B. Smith (lyricist). It's a Christmastime pop standard. Dick Smith, a native of Honesdale, Pennsylvania, was reportedly inspired to write the song after seeing Honesdale's Central Park covered in snow. Smith had written the lyrics while in the West Mountain Sanitarium, being treated for tuberculosis, better known then as consumption.[1] The West Mountain Sanitarium is located off N. Sekol Ave. in Scranton, Pennsylvania.[citation needed] The original recording was by Richard Himber and his Hotel Ritz-Carlton Orchestra on RCA Bluebird in 1934. At the end of a recording session with time to spare, it was suggested that this new tune be tried with an arrangement provided by the publisher. This excellent "studio" orchestra included many great New York studio musicians including the legendary Artie Shaw. The biggest chart hit at the time of introduction was Guy Lombardo's orchestra, a top ten hit[2]. Singer-songwriter Johnny Mercer took the song to #4 in Billboard's airplay chart in 1946. The same season, Perry Como hit the retail top ten. Como would record a new version for his 1959 Christmas album. Due to its seasonal theme, "Winter Wonderland" is often regarded as a Christmas song in the Northern Hemisphere, although the holiday itself is never mentioned in the lyrics. There is a mention of "sleigh-bells" several times, implying that this song refers to the .... + Informações

NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Kapp 749) Out of New York, this stunning disc is the first of two classy releases by Chi Chi on the Kapp label. A dramatic vocal perfomance over a larger than life, 'Wall Of Sound' arrangement. This is one of those records that for everyone involved, it must have been frustrating to have given their all, creating a musical masterpiece that would be pressed, released and ultimately receive next to no airplay. Thankfully, the two Kapp singles issued by Chi Chi have received their recognition as they are now sought after among the collectors of American Soul music. Chi Chi remembers the Kapp sessions: ".....I believe I rehearsed from an instrumental version on a track at Kama Sutra. Another time later, we went into Columbia Studios in NY the likes I had never seen before! I asked, "Who was coming?" The "orchestra" was on 2 levels. Kettle drums - strings - everything! I swore Frank Sinatra himself was going to show up! I was told that it was for my session. (We were going to do, "Just Let It Happen" and "If You're Gonna Love Me"). I was so nervous! Anyway, we did them a few times then I left. I think later I went back into the studio with headset and recorded over the music. I think the background singers were added after or during the first session, and I did not see them when I was there." While CHI CHI recorded the definitive version of 'If You're Gonna Love Me', the original version was recorded in 1965 by REGINA on Columbia Records .... + Informações

The Broadway Nitelites were one of the MANY Groups lead by Ben Selvin. More than likely an aggregation of Columbia Studio Artists... Originally a violinist, Ben Selvin probably made more records than any other bandleader of the 78 rpm era. His career in the record industry spanned decades. He was born around 1898 to Russian immigrants. His father, Max, was a tailor. Selvin started playing the fiddle at the age of 7 and made his first public appearance at the Star Casino at the age of nine. Acclaimed a prodigy, and presented with a gold medal in recognition of his genius, it was planned to send him to Paris for further study, however a reversal in good fortune prevented him from going, but Ben was still determined to succeed by working in and around New York. In 1913 Selvin made his first appearance on Broadway. From there he went to Rector's, then to Reisenweber's and Healy's. When he was nineteen years old, Ben Selvin organized his own orchestra and played at the Moulin Rouge for a record run of seven years. In November 20, 1919 Selvin's Novelty Orchestra arrived at Victor Studios and cut two numbers. The First "Mandy" was released as Victor 18614, and his best selling record, "Dradnella" released in February 1920. He began steady work in radio by 1924, and was recording regularly for Vocalion Records. Few radio orchestras had so many listeners as Ben Selvin's Moulin Rouge Orchestra, which broadcast every Monday night over Station WJZ in New York. His status as an .... + Informações

William Stanley Greening (march 1,1888 Kensington - ? 1971 Clapham) In September 1901 he entered the Royal Academy of Music having won an Ada Lewis Scholarship and studied cello with Herbert Walenn. He also studied piano and composition at the Academy. Between 1907 and 1912 he was first cello under Jimmy Glover at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane also playing principal cello for the Bridlington Municipal Symphony Orchestra just before the Great War. In 1919 he played for Adrian Boult for a season of the Diaghilev Ballet at the Empire Theatre, Leicester Square. It was probably around this time that he saw potential opportunities in the field of popular music and took up playing the banjo and by 1923 becoming a bandleader and provider. In the early Summer of 1924 he became a provider for recordings being made by the Crystalate Company for their Imperial and Mimosa labels, a position he maintained until the early 1930s, though latterly he was providing accompaniments only. Around the same time, he worked for Parlophone and is likely to have organised the sessions issued as by "The Marlborough Dance Orchestra". Much the same musicians made recordings for Winner as "Edison Bell Dance Orchestra". It has never been discovered who provided the band, but Stan Greening must be the prime candidate. At the start of 1925, Stan began working for Columbia, providing studio dance bands and accompaniments for the Columbia and Regal labels. In this capacity he replaced English music composer .... + Informações

A vocal version of "Without My Lover" was also issued in 1953 by Jo Stafford. Transferred and digitally processed from the original 45rpm: Columbia 4-39901 - Without My Lover (Bolero Gaucho) (Guitton-Michel-Engvick-Phillipe-Gerard) by Mitch Miller and his Orchestra, harpsichord by Stan Freeman. + Informações
