NBC was the first because it employed the RCA system for transmitting colour which was selected by the NTSC and adopted by the US FCC as the American Transmission Standard. This is sample footage of the earliest surviving colour videotape recording which is the Dwight Eisenhower inaugural address to WRC-TV on 22nd May 1958. The first 15 minutes of this event was shot in B&W which you see the president arriving to the building and the news reporter giving details of the event, then about nearly 15 minutes in Robert Sarnoff hits the colour switch and on comes the colour. For the remaining 15 minutes Robert Sarnoff, Dwight Eisenhower and David Sarnoff speak about the station and the colour television technology while being recorded in living colour!!! The whole program is available for download in DVD quality from a user on Veoh right here www.veoh.com . In the sample I've included the B&W portion where the president arrives and the colour portion which Robert Sarnoff and Dwight Eisenhower speak. USA started broadcasting colour in late 1953 and colour TV sets were available to the public in 1954 at an expensive price. Colour videotaping began in USA in 1958 and this footage is the earliest known to exist and it has been successfully transferred to digital for preservation. It is totally awesome to know that some colour programs from the late 1950s have survived on colour videotape as they show to us younger generations how good colour television really was back in its earliest days!!! Those RCA TK-41 cameras gave brilliant pictures back in the day!!!. + Informações

Despite what many people think, "large screen" solid state B&W floor model and table model TV's were available well into the '70's and I know that Zenith offered a 22" model at least until 1981. When color TV started to take off in the mid '60's, the popularity of B&W consoles started to decline. However, there were many people who did not want any part of color TV and it was this group of people who these "last gasp" B&W consoles were marketed to. These "last gasp" models didn't sell nearly as well as color TV's; therefore, they are hard to find today. In 25 years of collecting, I only recall seeing 3 or 4 of these "last gasp" models. One was a metal cabinet Zenith table model and the rest were consoles. The TV you see here is a 1978 model Sylvania 22" solid state model that I got from a TV dealer who was no longer in business. This set was a display model that was never sold; however, it's to the age where some of the capacitors in the vertical circuit are failing. Concerning other types of B&W TV's, I know that 19" B&W portables were available at least until the mid '80's, 12" B&W's were available until at least the mid '90's, and 5" portable AC/battery B&W's were available until shortly before the DTV transition of 6/09. Zenith even made some 12" and 19" B&W's that had digital keypad tuning.. + Informações

Die Bildqualität ist etwas flau, weil in der jetzigen Ausbaustufe die korrekten Kontrast-, die Farbraum- & die Gammaeinstellungen noch nicht möglich sind. Das wird im nächsten Schritt folgen. Die Unschärfe und die leicht bunte Granulation rühren von den lasertypischen Speckles. Der Projektor ist bereits mehr als zehn Jahre alt. Er wurde dereinst aus Teilen von alten Laserdruckern und anderem "Schrott" im Rahmen eines Jugend-forscht-Projektes gebaut. Er wird mittlerweile Stück für Stück um neue Features erweitert. Der Film im Film stammt übrigens noch aus der Zeit, in der der Projektor nur rot-schwarz war. Im nächsten Film wird zu sehen sein, wie es mit den richtigen Kontrast-, Farbraum- & Gammaeinstellungen aussieht. BBC Television had been experimenting with a colour system for a number of years when this film (This Is The BBC) was made in June 1960. It gave an impression of a day in the life of the corporation and colour experiments were featured at the end. Colour television experiments were conducted after the end of the usual television broadcasting hours, so usually television experiments were conducted in the early hours of the morning. The BBC were at this point experimenting with the American NTSC system until the mid 1960's when they swtiched to the German PAL system. The singer in this experimental colour transmission has now been positively identified as Janie Marden. Transmission: 29 June 1960.
