I choose to do my video on Celebration and Ritual so I filmed South Bend's St. Patrick's Day Parade. The parade took place in downtown South Bend the weekend before St. Patrick's Day. It was a cold, wet, windy day but that didn't stop tons of families from coming out and celebrating. Basically what I was trying to show with this film was how some local people celebrate St. Patrick's Day and also if this so called celebration actually focused on the holiday itself. The parade was headed by some of South Bend's police officers and firemen. Officers are shown walking down the street carrying the American flag, Indiana's flag, and shotguns. They are followed by a couple of squad cars and finally a fire truck which sounds it's siren to signal a celebration rather than the disasters we so commonly associate those sirens with. A bagpipe group then comes through and plays the common music associated with the Irish. The parade is more than 10 blocks long and the streets are filled with people. Despite the uncomfortable weather, this tradition seemed too important to miss for most. Many families were seen with their children, grand-children, nieces, nephews, brothers, etc. which made the parade feel like a family tradition that most of these people shared. Many came dressed in green with numerous strands of green beads hanging from their necks. Family pets were even included in the celebration and were also seen sporting the popular St. Patrick's Day colors. The animals included in .... + Informações

2011 © Fox News Phoenix An Arizona State University student missing for 10 days has been located in good condition in a remote part of southeastern Coconino County. 23-year-old Lauren Elizabeth Weinberg, a senior at ASU, was found in eastern Arizona Wednesday. Sheriff's spokesman Gerry Blair says Weinberg was discovered snowbound in her vehicle just before noon Wednesday. She was cold, wet, and hungry but ecstatic to be found. It just so happened that US Forest Service employees on snowmobiles were checking on gates in remote areas when they came across Weinberg. She was taken to the Flagstaff Medical Center. Lauren Weinberg decided to drive the north and eastern parts of the state during the worst possible time -- a massive winter storm moved in on the 12th of this month, blanketing the north country with feet of snow. "She told us she left on a paved road out of Winslow that turns into a dirt road, which makes sense cause that would be that Forest Road 34," says Blair. What Weinberg didn't know is that she'd ventured out onto an unpaved forest road that is nearly impossible to navigate in the winter. Her car became stuck, so she sat there for days and days without nothing more than candy bars and a bottle of water. "The mortality rate for these folks is much higher if they leave their vehicle and try to hike out, to the alternative of staying with the vehicle because the vehicle can provide some shelter and warmth," says Blair. When they wake up in spring, they build woven nests of honeysuckle bark and fresh leaves in hedgerows and woods. If the weather is cold and wet, and food scarce, they save energy by going into 'torpor' -- they curl up into a ball and go to sleep. In fact, in Britain the dormouse may spend up to three quarters of its life asleep, either hibernating in winter or in torpor during summer. It is believed their name comes from the Anglo-Norman word dormeus, meaning "sleepy (one)". This evolved to become dormouse even though they are more closely related to squirrels. As autumn comes, they prepare for hibernation by fattening up on nuts and berries. Then around the time of the first frost, when the temperatures fall below 15 oC, their metabolism shuts down and they find a secure, dry place to build a nest and sleep. During hibernation they lose about a quarter of their body weight. They don't actually sound like this in hibernation, so don't worry. The normal sound is a high-pitched 'peep'. Recipe for Sugar Glazed Fruits: 2 cups of sugar 1 cup of water 1/2 cup of light corn syrup fruit of your choice 1. Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with aluminum foil and spraying the foil with nonstick cooking spray. 2. Wash the fruits and dry them carefully. Then stick them onto the skewers. 3. Prepare an ice bath by placing ice and cold water in a bowl large enough to hold your intended saucepan. 4. Combine the sugar, corn syrup and water in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Insert a candy thermometer, and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. 5. Continue to cook, without stirring, until the temperature reaches 300 degrees on the candy thermometer. During this process, which can take from 10-20 minutes, wash down the sides of the saucepan occasionally with a wet pastry brush to prevent crystallization. 6. Once the candy has reached 250-300 degrees, remove the pan from the heat immediately, and immerse the bottom in the prepared ice bath to stop it from cooking any further.. Do not let the ice water get into the candy! 7. Once the candy has stopped cooking (look for the bubbles to stop rising from the bottom of the pan), you can begin to dip your fruits.
