In the early 1970s Lol Mason, Steve Broughton, Max Thomas and Chris Dunn were playing folk music in the Birmingham area. They toured the clubs of the Midlands until, towards the end of 1975, they decided to turn professional. Meanwhile Broughton had begun to write quite impressive songs. They were offered a recording contract by Phonogram Records on condition that they change their name (they were called "Back In the Band") and add drums and electric guitar. This prompted them to recruit Roger Kent and Mike Slamer. Their first albums failed to impress the audience, although some critics gave quite favourable reviews to City Boy (1975) and Dinner At The Ritz (1976). It was not until 1978, and their hit song "5.7.0.5.", and the subsequent album Book Early, that the public realised their potential. The single reached the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart,[1] achieving also a silver award for 200000 copies sold, although the album failed to scratch the UK Albums Chart.[1] With complex harmonies co-developed by the band and producer Robert John 'Mutt' Lange, City boy's sound could best be described as an early Def Leppard. Lange would later refine this sound in Leppard's legendary recordings. They were able to repeat their success with their 1979 album, The Day The Earth Caught Fire, and its title song as a single release. This album marked an early recording appearance by Huey Lewis, who played harmonica on the second track 'Only The End of The World'. After that, Broughton left .... + Informações

"City Boy" was the single taken from Jeff Conaway's self titled debut album on Columbia Records in 1979. Bruce Springsteen's manager, Mike Appel produced the album & Jeff Conaway's album is filled with the typical sounds & grooves that was so popular in the late 1970's. Jeff Conaway was a musician way before he was an actor & when he was 16 years old, Conaway's passion for music pushed him to join a band. He was singer and rhythm guitarist for the band," 3 1/2" and they toured with different bands including Herman's Hermits, The Animals, Gladys Knight and the Pips. City Boy - The Hap-ki-do Kid LIVE from "Top Of The Pops" 1976. City Boy's first 4 albums were recently (August 2008) re-released on cd. Don't miss! Max Thomas (keyboards) own story about the recording: "CB's first single release was Hap-Ki-Do in 1976, and we nearly had a hit with it. In those days "Top of the Pops" in the UK only concentrated on the top 30, as opposed to the top 40. The BBC would only include one song per week on the programme that wasn't in the top 30, and that had to be the fastest rising single of that week. We came straight in at 32* that week, and so we were offered to go on. Unfortunately, that was the first week for several years that the BBC (or the newly-appointed producer of the show) decided to allow only live music, and we were the first act on, and I remember NO opportunity for any soundcheck, and I also remember asking repeatedly for another plug socket so I could plug in the last of my four keyboards, and I finally got it about 30 seconds before we played. It was a nightmare. We'd even got Mutt Lange to be there in the mixing room to mix the sound, and he barely had time to make sure that everything was connected before we began. As a consequence, the song came across really badly...we played quite well as I recall, but the sound balance was appalling. British band City Boy is an almost forgotten gem often labelled as a "one hit wonder" (5.7.0.5). That may be true in a commercial sense but they made 7 solid albums filled with creative music and clever lyrics. Here is another great song, "Walk On The Water", taken from their (imo) best album "Dinner At The Ritz". The video is made with Windows Movie Maker = don't expect wonders regarding the video effects... ;-) NOTE: Before someone complains; Roy Ward (who is listed as a band member in the video) didn't play drums on "Dinner At The Ritz" and this song.
