The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra is a pops orchestra based in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States, founded in 1977 out of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Its members are also the members of the Cincinnati Symphony, and the Pops is managed by the same administration. Erich Kunzel, the Pops' founding conductor, continued to lead the Pops until his death in 2009. In 1965, maestro Max Rudolf invited Erich Kunzel, a young conductor on the faculty of Brown University, to join the Cincinnati Symphony. That October, Kunzel, a Dartmouth graduate and assistant to French conductor Pierre Monteux, conducted his first "8 O'Clock" Pops concert. Over the next six decades, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra regularly performed for packed houses in Cincinnati's Music Hall and established worldwide recognition through tours and critically acclaimed, best-selling recordings on the Telarc label. In May 2008, the Pops received an invitation to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the only American orchestra to play the opening weekend. The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is teaming up with its Ascent Series Creative Director Lang Lang, to offer young pianists the chance to win a Master class with the superstar pianist, taking submissions via YouTube making them available for public viewing. "As part of my Creative Directorship with the CSO, I wanted to find a special way to reach out to young musicians," said Lang Lang. "This competition provides these talented young people not just with a chance to win a Master class, but also to have their talents on display for the judges and for the world," he said. To enter the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra/Lang Lang YouTube Piano Competition, student pianists ages 8 to 16 are invited to submit a video up to ten minutes in length of themselves performing a single piece or movement from a larger work. To enter, contestants should upload their videos on to YouTube and title them, "CSO & Lang Lang, Look at Me!" Parents or guardians of the contestants should then complete the online submission form at www.cincinnatisymphony.org/YouTube. Contestants must be available in Cincinnati on Saturday May 5. A panel of judges comprised of three local top-notch pianists will select a group of finalists. "South of the Border" is a popular song describing a trip to Mexico, written by Jimmy Kennedy and Michael Carr and published in 1939 for the film of the same name starring country star Gene Autry.
