Hymn prelude by composer Seth Daniels Bingham (1882-1972) based on, "Break Thou the Bread of Life". From Twelve Hymn-Preludes on Familiar Tunes, Op. 38, Set 2, HW Gray, 1942. In the Book of John, chapter 6, verse 35, Jesus said, "I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst." The meanings are found beyond the physical items of bread, books, and conditions like hunger and thirst. Seth Bingham was a prolific composer of sacred music. The work was likely composed while organist at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1913-1951. The organ at the time was a 4 manual, 73 rank, Casavant. The photos of the organ in the video were taken in 1939. Recorded in The Mother Church, The First church of Christ Scientist in Boston, MA. I spent many hours back in the day late at night with Uncle "TT" (Dr. Thomas Richner), helping to set pistons for services. Many times I was a stand in for Clay Douglas and Esperanza Isman for the purposes of rehearsal. This was very impromptu. Tom had an amazing ability to improvise registrations off the top of his head. Can't begin to say what it meant for a 17 year old to routinely interact musically with someone like Tommy. The massive Aeolian Skinner organ was like a huge orchestra with complete unanimity. Its sound was completely unique. It's great to hear those distinctive strings with MY voice. That Flute! I forget its name. I was 22 at the time we recorded this.. + Informações

"The Spirit of God Like A Fire Is Burning," is from a trio of hymn tune arrangements by Bethel Knoche. It was first performed publicly by Knoche in 1967 on the RLDS Auditorium Organ in Independence, Missouri. The RLDS Church has changed its name to Community of Christ. The origin of the tune remains undocumented but may be identified with the names Paraclete, Hosanna, and Assembly. This arrangement premiered as an encore to a concert on May 6, 1967. It prominently features the trompette en chamade of the organ. The program of the organ recital is worth mentioning: Toccata by Georg Muffat (1653-1704), Suite for Organ by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767), Fanfare by Percy Whitlock (1903-1946), the world premiere of Sinfonia No. 5 by Herman Berlinski (1910-2001), Cantabile by Cesar Franck (1822-1890), The Soul of the Lake by Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933), and Petite Suite by Gerald Bales (1919-2002). An extra note: Knoche commissioned composer Herman Berlinski to write Sinfonia No. 5. He used the poetry of Nelly Sachs for inspiration. Sachs was co-winner of the 1966 Nobel Prize for Literature so the concert event was quite extraordinary.
