Chris Thile performing Jack White's "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" sans-Punch Bros. This solo mandolin version to me surpasses any full-band version I've heard (not including the White Stripes original and live versions) His mandolin playing is really thrust into the spotlight. Also, I think the removal of the guitar, banjo, and violin create a more stripped-down sound that lovers of the original will like more. Just before Chris Thile, There Was A Certain Mandolin Player...And He Was The Fiddler/Violinist; Mark O'Connor. When an 8 year-old Chris Thile heard 29 year-old Mark O'Connor's mandolin solo on his and Sam Bush's composition 'Macedonia' from their groundbreaking 1989 "Strength In Numbers" album - the mandolin world shifted into another dimension! Notice nearly everything about Mark O'Connor's mandolin playing in this video from 1990 that Chris Thile has emulated - from the super-clean-fast-smooth picking technique to the virtuosity of the music, the deft dexterity of both hands, even the body posture, knee up in the air, torso doubled over the mandolin, with the face almost in the strings. There are many parallels: Mark became the World Mandolin Champion in Kerrville, TX as a teenager. Chris became National Mandolin Champion in Winfield, KS at age 12. Mark played guitar/fiddle/mandolin and Chris chose the same three instruments to excel on - guitar/fiddle/mandolin. The mandolin solo that resonated to an 8-year old Chris Thile was O'Connor's 'Macedonia' solo, (also performed here on this video by Mark as a solo piece). Chris asked his Nickel Creek childhood friend mandolin player Sean Watkins to trade instruments with him - for good.
