Signup for Fiddle Tune a Day at www.vithefiddler.com My main memory of My Wild Irish Rose is hearing my dad sing it and play it on the tenor banjo while my grandpa backed him up on guitar. It was always one of the favorites at the ice cream socials we played when I was a kid. I recorded today's fiddle tune at the Tapestry House, the fanciest wedding venue in Fort Collins, where a very fancy photo shoot was taking place. My Wild Irish Rose may be the penultimate Irish Ballad. It has a great melody, and the chorus begs the listener to join in and sing along. Don't be afraid to sing along as you listen. My Wild Irish Rose from the Contemplator The lyrics and music to My Wild Irish Rose were written by Chauncey Olcott for his production of A Romance of Athlone. The music was published in 1899. His other hits included When Irish Eyes are Smiling.* My Wild Irish Rose Lyrics If you'll listen, I'll sing you a sweet little song, Of a flower that's now drooped and dead, Yet dearer to me, yes, than all of its mates, Tho' each holds aloft its proud head. If you listen I'll sing you a sweet little song Of a flower that's now droped and dead, Yet dearer to me, yes than all of its mates, Though each holds aloft its proud head. Twas given to me by a girl that I know, Since we've met, faith I've known no repose. She is dearer by far than the world's brightest star, And I call her my wild Irish Rose. My wild Irish Rose, the sweetest flower that grows. You may search everywhere, but none can compare with my wild Irish Rose. My wild Irish Rose, the dearest flower that grows, And some day for my sake, she may let me take the bloom from my wild Irish Rose. 2. They may sing of their roses, which by other names, Would smell just as sweetly, they say. But I know that my Rose would never consent To have that sweet name taken away. Her glances are shy when e'er I pass by The bower where my true love grows, And my one wish has been that some day I may win The heart of my wild Irish Rose. My wild Irish Rose, the sweetest flower that grows. You may search everywhere, but none can compare with my wild Irish Rose. My wild Irish Rose, the dearest flower that grows, And some day for my sake, she may let me take the bloom from my wild Irish Rose.. + Informações

MOTHER MACHREE There's a spot in my heart which no other may own, There's a depth in our souls never sounded or known; There's a place in my mem'ry, my life that you fill, No other can take it?no one ever will. Ev'ry sorrow or care in the dear days gone by Was made bright by the light of the smile in your eye; Like a candle that's set in a window at night Your fond love has cheered me, and guided me right. Sure I love the dear silver that shines in your hair And the brow that's all furrowed and wrinkled with care I kiss the dear fingers so toil-worn for me God bless you and keep you, Mother Machree! Signup for Fiddle Tune a Day at: www.vithefiddler.com What a day. After having a really fun coffee tasting party with Brewsworthy Coffees, I had a bit of a buzz going. Now, I'm just tuckered out. The coffee was great, and so was the company. Continuing with my Irish trend, I played When Irish Eyes are Smiling tonight. This is another tune that I learned by hearing my dad play it on tenor banjo. We would frequently play this tune when we played music at nursing homes. I would frequently look out to see one or two of the older people with a tear in their eye as they listened and sang along. It is a beautiful song. This tune, like My Wild Irish Rose, was written by Chauncy Olcott. When Irish Eyes Are Smiling according to Wikipedia "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" is a lighthearted song in tribute to Ireland. Its lyrics were written by Chauncey Olcott and George Graff, Jr., set to music composed by Ernest Ball, for Olcott's production of The Isle O' Dreams, and Olcott sang the song in the show. It was first published in 1912, at a time when songs in tribute to a romanticized Ireland were very numerous and popular both in Britain and the United States. During the First World War the famous tenor John McCormack recorded the song. The song continued to be a familiar standard for generations. Decades later it was used as the opening song on the radio show Duffy's Tavern. Words and music: Chauncey Olcott, George Graff, Ernest Ball, This song was written in 1912, and has been since then a standard tribute to Ireland. John McCormack recorded a very popular version of this song, and since then many other singers have made their own versions: Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Joni James, Roger Whitaker, Connie Francis, etc, etc Lyrics: There's a tear in your eye, And I'm wondering why, For it never should be there at all. With such power in your smile, Sure a stone you'd beguile, So there's never a teardrop should fall. When your sweet lilting laughter's Like some fairy song, And your eyes twinkle bright as can be You should laugh all the while And all other times smile, And now, smile a smile for me. When Irish eyes are smiling, Sure, 'tis like the morn in Spring. In the lilt of Irish laughter You can hear the angels sing. When Irish hearts are happy, All the world seems bright and gay. And when Irish eyes are smiling, Sure, they steal your heart away. For your smile is a part Of the love in your heart, And it makes even sunshine more bright. Like the linnet's sweet song, Crooning all the day long, Comes your laughter so tender and light. For the springtime of life Is the sweetest of all There is ne'er a real care or regret; And for the springtime is ours Throughout all of youth's hours, Let us smile each chance we get. When Irish eyes are smiling, Sure, 'tis like the morn in Spring. In the lilt of Irish laughter You can hear the angels sing. When .... + Informações

This is another one of those Irish songs that are not really Irish - like Molly Malone. James Royce (1881 - 1946) was a prominent actor and composer of the Tin Pan Alley era. Born in Michigan, he added the "Shannon" to his name to make it sound Irish, as "Irish" music was popular at the time. This is his best-known song, written in 1913 for the musical production by Chauncey Olcott, "Shameen Dhu (Black-Haired Jimmy)", which was staged in New York in 1914. The song had a new lease of life when it was sung by Bing Crosby in the movie "Going My Way" (1944). It has since been sung by many artists, including Dean Martin, Bob McGrath and Van Morrison. This song was requested by NotTooObvious.
