Charlie Christian is generally recognised as the person who popularised the electric guitar (although not the first) and who changed everyones thinking about how jazz could be played on it. As well as playing guitar for Benny Goodman, Charlie participated in after hours jam sessions with other musicians in places such as Mintons and Monroes in New York City. On 12 May 1941 Charlie played Swing to Bop (also known as Topsy) at Mintons, with Joe Guy on trumpet, Kenny Kersey on piano, Nick Fenton on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. This live track excerpt is characterised by longer solos than Charlie would typically play with Goodman, and is a good indication of his incredible improvisational abilities. His influence on guitarists then and since has been massive. Famed jazz guitarist Barney Kessel spent three days with Charlie watching him play. "He played probably 95% downstrokes and held a very stiff big triangular pick very tightly between his thumb and first finger. Here is another Charlie Christian track playing live at Mintons in New York City (the other I have uploaded is Swing to Bop from the same session). These are my two favourite CC tracks. However I also love his Goodman stuff, both studio and radio broadcasts as well (see my video of Rose Room). Charlie not only popularised the electric guitar, but also influenced just about everyone who came after with his horn like solos and sense of swing. On 12 May 1941 Charlie Christian jammed on 'Stompin' at the Savoy' at Mintons, with Joe Guy on trumpet, Nick Fenton on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. Despite the original acetates indicating Thelonious Monk played piano, some consider it was Kenny Kersey based, at least in part, on analysis of playing style. Rose Room was one of the first studio tunes recorded 2 October 1939 by guitarist Charlie Christian after he joined the Benny Goodman Sextet. I love this and other Goodman small group tracks as they are a good introduction to jazz and swing. They are popular circa forties' era tunes, with members taking melodic solos that can be appreciated against the chord changes. These tracks initially helped me 'get' jazz, rather than being scared off by some of the less user friendly forms of it. This song was also important in helping Charlie join Goodman's group. The story goes that Charlie sat in unannounced with Goodman's group at a live performance at the Victor Hugo restaurant in Los Angeles on 16 August 1939, at the instigation of producer John Hammond, who had been hearing about Charlie's electric guitar work in Oklahoma City. (Apparently Goodman had not shown much interest in Charlie when he had auditioned briefly on acoustic guitar at a recording session earlier that day). According to Wikipedia, 'displeased at the surprise, Goodman called "Rose Room", a tune he assumed that Christian would be unfamiliar with. Unknown to Goodman, Charles had been reared on the tune, and he came in with his solo ? which was to be the first of about twenty, all of them different, all unlike anything Goodman had heard before. A short video for those who want to have an idea of the great sound of the Charlie Christian Pick Up reissue made by cc-pickups in the UK It was recorded on the camcoder microphone but you still can get this very dynamic sound, a little bit compressed, with very nice and accurate bass and this chunky non-aggressive medium-high. Playing with volume and tone knobs DOES really allow you lot of possibilities.. I enjoyed cranking up the pre-amp of the 15 watts fender blues junior to get a little T-Bone/Charlie smooth overdrive... By the way sorry for the mistakes, it was all made in one take, tried to play as much as possible so you get the idea of the sound.. My advice if you're not sure : don't hesitate ! I had it installed on my beloved 1954 ES 125 and it rocks dude !. + Informações

Swing to Bop (Topsy) - Stompin at the Savoy - Up on Teddy's Hill - Guy's Got to Go - Lips Flips. A Columbia University student, Jerry Newman, made most of these "after-hours" recordings on a portable disk recorder in 1941 at Minton's Playhouse in the Hotel Cecil, 210 West 118th Street in Harlem. This technology let him record significantly longer takes than current 78 rpm technology would allow. (There were then no commonly available magnetic tape recorders although one from AEG, called the Magnetophon K1, had been demonstrated in Germany in 1935.) The Minton's band features Joe Guy on trumpet, Kenny Kersey on piano and Kenny Clarke on drums. "Swing to Bop" is a tune by Eddie Durham called "Topsy." There are also recordings here made at Clark Monroe's Uptown House. These include trumpeter Oran "Hot Lips" Page (not credited on the original Everest/Esoteric LP) and Don Byas on tenor sax.
