The photo on the right is Lewis, left is Williams. Williams wrote many books and slews of book reviews during his tenure as editor with Oxford Press. He is best known for his seven otherworldly novels, of which "All Hallows' Eve" and "Descent Into Hell" are probably the most widely celebrated. Besides CS Lewis, TS Eliot and WH Auden were also both good friends and big fans of Williams. Charles Williams ( real name Isaac Cozerbreit ) (1893-1978) was a British conductor and composer of film and light music who took the same professional name as his Polish-born father, who was also in the entertainment business. This piece - the theme from the British 1947 movie 'While I Live' (aka 'The Dream of Olwen') - is one of Williams' best known pieces and was enormously popular in the 1940s and 1950s. I have used the published solo version (with slight augmentation of the last bar). The movie itself - with its sleepwalking scene, and reincarnation subject matter - made a huge impact on me when I saw it on black-and-white television in the early 1960s. Charles Williams (born Isaac Cozerbreit on 8 May 1893 in London, died 7 September 1978 in Findon Valley, Worthing, West Sussex, England) was a British composer and conductor, contributing music to over 50 films. While his career ran from 1934 through 1968, much of his work came to the big screen as stock music and was therefore uncredited. Charles Williams originally played as a freelance violinist in theatres, cinemas and symphony orchestras. He studied composition with Norman O'Neill at the Royal Academy of Music. In 1933, he went to Gaumont British Films as composer and stayed there until 1939. He composed for many British films and radio shows. After the end of World War II, he became the conductor of the new Queen's Hall Light Orchestra. Later, he formed his Concert Orchestra. He composed many orchestral pieces and marches, which were recorded in the "Mood Music" category of Light Music. He wrote the signature tunes of the radio programme "The Voice of London" and also Devil's Gallop, the theme tune to the radio serial Dick Barton. He also composed the popular piano concerto pastiche, The Dream of Olwen, for the film While I Live. His composition The Young Ballerina accompanied probably the most famous of the BBC's 1950s so-called interludes, namely The Potter's Wheel. An abridged version of his Majestic Fanfare (1935) was used by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) for many years as the signature tune for its radio and television news broadcasts. "Devil's Gallop", performed by Charles Williams and his concert orchestra and composed by Charles Williams, it was the theme tune to the radio serial Dick Barton - Special Agent. It has since been used in a number of productions, often to give a sense of dramatic urgency to a chase scene. As well as being the theme for the BBC Light Programme's serial Dick Barton, other appearances include Dads Army, The Goodies, the Goon Show (the original theme music for which is called 'Goons Gallop' and is reminiscent of Devil's Gallop). Monty Python used this theme through out its run on television including the famous The Spanish Inquisition sketch. The theme has been featured recently in Mitcell and Webbs The Surprising Adventures of Sir Digby Chicken-Caesar sketches, and the 30 Rock episode "Tracey Does Conan".
