Charles Gounod (1818-1893) The "Funeral March of a Marionette," slight as it is, has never lost its charm. It was originally written as one of the movements of a Suite Burlesque, which was never completed. BBC Philharmonic conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier The music in the beginning is supposed to tell the listener that two of the members of the Marionette troupe have had a duel and one of them has been killed. A party of pallbearers is organized and the procession sets out for the cemetery in march time. The music soon takes on a more cheerful spirit, for some of the troupe, wearied with the march, seek consolation at a wayside inn, where they refresh themselves and also descant upon the many virtues of their late companion. At last they get into place again and the procession enters the cemetery to the march rhythm -- the whole closing with the bars intended to reflect upon the briefness and weariness of life, even for marionettes. Alfred Hitchcock Presents is well known for its title sequence. The camera fades in on a simple line-drawing caricature of Hitchcock's rotund profile. As the program's theme music, Charles Gounod's Funeral March of a Marionette, plays, Hitchcock himself appears in silhouette from the right edge of the screen, and then walks to center screen to eclipse the caricature. Listen to my rendetion of famous Gounod's Ave Maria. Actually Gounod copied JS Bach's prelludium, added text and solo melody. But it's nice and really well-known piece. There is something initially ominous about the central development before the themes of the exposition emerge, to be heard in fuller form in the final recapitulation. The hymn-like B flat major Larghetto slowly unfolds, leading to a central passage of jauntier, dotted rhythms, after which the first theme returns, with an accompanying first violin counterpoint, later taken up by violas and cellos, as the violins take charge of the melody. There is something of Beethoven about the G minor Scherzo, and the contrasting G major Trio duly finds a place for woodwind instruments. There is a light-opera elegance about the Finale, with its delicate first subject entrusted to the first violins and the second to the woodwind. The Bach/Gounod Ave Maria is a popular and much-recorded setting of the Latin text Ave Maria. Written by French Romantic composer Charles Gounod in 1859, his Ave Maria consists of a melody superimposed over the Prelude No. 1 in C major from Book I of the Well-Tempered Clavier (BWV 846), composed by JS Bach some 137 years earlier. (Gounod adds one bar so as to smooth out a rough change in harmony in the prelude.) There are many different instrumental arrangements of the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria, including for violin and guitar, string quartet, piano solo, cello, and even trombones. It is often performed in Christian wedding ceremonies. Many pop and opera singers, such as Beyonce Knowles and Luciano Pavarotti, as well as choirs have recorded it during the twentieth century. Dies wurde zum Zentrum seiner ?Faust"-Oper. Um den Preis seiner Seele erlangt der lebenssatte Faust von Mephistopheles Jugend und Leidenschaft zurück. Mephistopheles lässt ihm die Vision von Margarete erscheinen, die Faust alsbald begehrt und zu sehen wünscht. Mephistopheles arrangiert dies und gegen ihre anfänglichen Widerstände wird Margarete schließlich Fausts Geliebte. Sie erwartet bald ein Kind von ihm, wird dann aber verlassen. Margaretes Bruder Valentin will die Schmach seiner Schwester rächen und fordert ihn zum Duell. Mit Hilfe Mephistopheles tötet Faust Valentin. Von Faust dazu aufgefordert, führt Mephistopheles ihn ins Gefängnis zu Margarete, die zur Kindsmörderin geworden ist. Faust drängt sie zur Flucht mit ihm, wird aber von ihr zurückgewiesen. Sie erkennt in Mephistopheles den Teufel, stirbt und steigt in verklärter Gestalt zum Himmel auf.
