London: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg changed his status to 'married' recently, but his social-networking website is causing a third of all divorces, a new UK survey has claimed. According to a the survey, feuding couples are increasingly complaining about their spouse's behaviour on Facebook in divorce filings, with inappropriate messages to the opposite sex being the biggest cause for complaint. More than 33 per cent of divorces last year listed Facebook as a contributing factor, a study of 5000 divorce petitions by UK law firm Divorce-Online found. The figure has shot up from just 20 per cent in 2009. A strange thing happened in the 1960s and 70s. There was a virtual barrage of family television shows where the families were broken. Symbolically taking the place of the missing parent we had nannies, maids, butlers, wayward uncles and even a building superintendent. Even the TV classic "The Brady Bunch" was the product of two broken families cobbled together in the way that only television can do. What is also troubling is how often these shows portrayed these family situations as not only happy but actually desirable. "The Partridge Family" promised to make us happy; "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" promised "So much fun"; "One Day at a Time" beckoned us to "Come and Have a Ball!" In the first wave of these shows the single parent was nearly always a widowed male, it wasn't until the broken family was well entrenched in the network lineups that the divorced parent was introduced. The question is why? Why this peculiar interest in portraying families that are broken in every conceivable way? And what was the psychological effect that all these shows had on the millions of people, and especially the children who watched them? The target audience of many of these shows was children; why purposefully subject these children to the unpleasant possibilities of divorce and death coming to their homes?
