Mazagão foi uma possessão portuguesa em Marrocos, no norte da África, correspondendo à actual cidade de El Jadida, 90 km para sudoeste de Casablanca. Fundada em 1513 como entreposto comercial, resistiu à soberania dos mouros a custa de grande esforço e investimento da Coroa portuguesa, para servir os navegadores que faziam a Rota do Cabo. A reedificação da fortaleza foi encomendada aos maiores arquitectos italianos e espanhóis, numa altura em que se transitava da guerra neurobalística para a pirobalística, ou seja, das armas de arremesso (como as catapultas, por exemplo) para as armas de fogo. Assim se justifica a inclinação das muralhas, que deste modo repelem impacto das armas de fogo, assim como o alargamento das ameias, para a colocação das colubrinas, canhões e demais dispositivos. No ano de 1541, no reindado de D. João III foram demolidas as estruturas defensivas existentes, que estavam em decadência e desactualizadas, sendo substituídas por outras em molde renascentista, segundo se pensa consoante o plano de Diogo de Torralva e possivelmente outros engenheiros de renome como João de Castilho. A prova da sua inexpugnabilidade foi a resistência a um forte cerco dos Mouros em 1562. Em 1769, o Marquês de Pombal, ministro durante o reinado de D. José, decidiu que toda a cidade seria transferida para a Amazônia, no Brasil, outra região sob controle português que necessitava de garantias de soberania.
