Recorded In 1928 - Peaked On US Billboard Music Charts At #14 In 1929 (2 weeks) The Carter Family was a traditional American folk music group that recorded between 1927 and 1956. Their music had a profound impact on bluegrass, country, Southern Gospel, pop and rock musicians as well as on the US folk revival of the 1960s. They were the first vocal group to become country music stars. The original group consisted of Alvin Pleasant "AP" Delaney Carter (1891--1960), his wife Sara Dougherty Carter (1898--1979), and his sister-in-law Maybelle Addington Carter (1909--1978). Maybelle was married to AP's brother Ezra (Eck) Carter and was also Sara's first cousin. All three were born and raised in southwestern Virginia, where they were immersed in the tight harmonies of mountain gospel music and shape note singing. Throughout the group's career, Sara Carter sang lead vocals; Maybelle sang harmony and accompanied the group instrumentally; on some songs AP did not perform at all but at times sang harmony and background vocals and once in a while, lead vocal. Maybelle's distinctive guitar playing style became a hallmark of the group. The Carter Family made their first recordings on August 2, 1927. AP had persuaded Sara and Maybelle the day before to make the journey from Maces Spring, Virginia, to Bristol, Tennessee, to audition for record producer Ralph Peer, who was seeking new talents for the relatively embryonic recording industry. Dom Flemons of the group granted us a wonderful interview in which he talked about his understanding of Lesley Riddle's invaluable contribution to the Carter catalogue. In the late 1920s AP Carter became friends with Lesley "Esley" Riddle, a singer and guitar player, who introduced Carter to a wealth of spirituals and blues. Riddle, a black man with one leg, and AP Carter, a very tall man with a constant tremor, made quite a pair as they travelled together through the Jim Crow South knocking on doors asking for songs. The Carter Family had tapped into another popular strain of music. Worried Man Blues was their biggest selling record of 1930. Jim Potts and Tony Troughear sing "Hello Stranger", a song taught to The Carter Family by Leslie Riddles, in the 1930s. Here Jim plays bottleneck, Tony is the brilliant finger-picker: an Anglo-Australian duet captured on reel-to-reel tape in Nairobi, Kenya, ic. 1977, during a rehearsal. Sarah (and Maybelle) and AP Carter recorded their version on June 13, 1937, 9 months after they were divorced. I visited the Carter Family Fold (Maces Spring, now Hiltons, Tennessee) in 1999 , and I took the photos of AP's and Sarh's graves at the nearby cemetery. Hello Strangers! This is a tribute to them.
