Chinatown 3.20 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 38145 exibições In the tradition of Raymond Chandler and movies like The Big Sleep (Top 130: #24) and The Maltese Falcon (Top 130: #31), Chinatown is a near perfect movie which finds Private Investigator Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) plunged into a world of money, murder and... water. Robert Towne is the writer responsible for this, one of the best original screenplays ever written. And Roman Polanski (like Lean, in my previous post on Lawrence of Arabia) is brilliantly economic in his direction of scenes, trusting both the script and his actors. This particular scene between Gittes and Noah Cross (John Huston) is elegantly captured in one shot, avoiding the easy pitfalls of over-emphasizing the emotion of the scene. Polanski stays out of the way of the actors and keeps the camera back at a distance which brings to the surface the sheer banality of the evil communicated. It's also worth noting the composition of the scene at the 2:10 mark: the camera is behind Gittes who is framed to the left. This framing is used often and emphasizes that we only see what Gittes sees. We follow him through the convoluted web of lies and are never given information that he himself does not uncover. [Warning: major SPOILERs here. But if you haven't seen it, perhaps this will motivate you to rent or buy the DVD. A good story is worth telling over and over again, even if you know the ending!] From: jasongoode.wordpress.com. + Informações |

Picking out Diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) in china town food market. 2.42 min. | 3.3529413 avaliação | 6205 exibições I will first apologize for the quality of this video, and for me rambling on during it, but I was being watched by the owners of this market who did not seem to want anyone taking pictures. I wanted to look like an interested buyer, who wanted a pet turtle or 2, and NOT something more. I had been asked to leave like stores before for having my camera in them. In this case, I hung my camera around my neck, and clicked it on as I walked towards the turtles. I wanted to make sure to get them to quote the prices of the animals on the video, but not appear to be needling for information. I have purchase turtles from these markets many times, and some have survived and acclimated to captivity. Some die within hours. It is a very difficult process, especially with the Diamondbacks and Softshells, and is really something only experienced turtle keepers should try to do. After a year in captivity, these turtles still eat smelt, crabs, shrimp and other seafood, and not commercial turtle food, so that's something to think about before wanting to "save" them. Animals purchased at such markets SHOULD NOT, and CAN NOT be released into the wild because of the threat of disease transmission to a wild population, and because we do not know where they were harvested from. ANYWAY - This is footage of an Asian Grocery/fish market, located in Chinatown, Philadelphia. There are several of these markets there, and several commonly carry live turtles, in particular, the Diamondback terrapin .... + Informações |

Lion Dance in Chinatown 2.30 min. | 2.0 avaliação | 1108 exibições Inspired by our friend's Nasi Lemak Lunch [fusionview.co.uk/2009/01/remembering-how-to-be-malaysian/] , we headed into Chinatown today to stock up on some ingredients for reviving our Chinese cooking skills. By chance, we came upon a lion dance during the Chinese New Year festivities, which I captured on my trusty mobile phone. The lion is going from shop to shop to bless the businesses with good luck in this Year of the Ox. You'll see the lettuce hung on the door of the shop by the shopowner as an offering to the lion - which the beast grabs eagerly to munch. In return good luck is bestowed on the business in the coming year. The Snakehead 69.52 min. | 4.0 avaliação | 1711 exibições When human smuggler Sister Ping was finally captured by the FBI and went on trial in New York City, Patrick Radden Keefe became fascinated by the powerful "snakehead"-her business acumen, her underground network, and the respect and affection she commanded in Chinatown even as prosecutors charged her with being the kingpin of a vast and often violent criminal enterprise. Her story, and the story of the smuggling ship the Golden Venture, raised a series of fascinating questions about why people will still risk their lives and borrow tens of thousands of dollars to live and work as illegal immigrants in America. To get to the bottom of the story, Keefe interviewed smugglers and cops, government informants and FBI agents, White House officials and undocumented immigrants. He journeyed to Canada, where Sister Ping's network sent customers over the Niagara River in rubber rafts, to Hong Kong and Bangkok, where corrupt officials allowed undocumented immigrants to board planes to America, to the rust belt town of York, Pennsylvania, where the Golden Venture passengers were imprisoned for four years, and to Fujian Province, China, where many villages are completely empty now-because everyone has left for America.. + Informações |

Wild Nothing - Gemini - Chinatown 3.28 min. | 4.9620852 avaliação | 51877 exibições Download at bit.ly Wild Nothing is 21-year-old Blacksburg, Virginia songwriter Jack Tatum (aka Jack And The Whale aka a member of Facepaint). Yeah, another one man band. But no, not just another one man band. Instead of doing the fuzzy lo-fi thing, Tatum wraps his elastic voice in a dramatic dream-pop haze. (Or in a song like "Live In Dreams" you hear bedroom Marr and Moz.) In an interview he mentions the Cocteau Twins along with Shop Assistants, My Bloody Valentine, and, yes, the Smiths (plus the Radio Dept. and other Swedish pop-makers) as influences. To give you more of an idea he covers Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting." To give you even more of an idea.... + Informações |

North Korea Public Execution (w/English narration) 3.38 min. | 4.030303 avaliação | 620551 exibições The blurry film - apparently from a hidden camera - appeared to show one man being shot in Yuson town near the border with China on March 2, 2005. The condemned faced the firing squad shortly after a brief trial in which a judge found him guilty of trying to cross into China and smuggle others there. Three gunmen each fired one shot at the prisoner who was tied to a pole. Another female defendent was sentenced to10 years of labor camp. The video was carried out of North Korea by several defectors. It was filmed by unnamed residents of the Stalinist state. It decided to publicize the tape after determining witness accounts of the executions matched the images captured on film, the statement said. A Seoul-based group called the Commission to Help North Korean Refugees said last month that North Korea had executed 70 defectors who were captured in China and sent home to discourage its citizens from fleeing the country. The number of people fleeing North Korea decreased drastically following the executions, the group said. A trickle of defectors from the communist North has swelled into a steady flow in recent years as more attempt to flee hunger and political repression in their homeland. Nearly 1900 North Koreans defected to the South last year, an increase of almost 50 percent from the year before. More than 100000 North Koreans are living or hiding in China, the Commission to Help North Korean Refugees has estimated.. + Informações |

Union Square, Approaching Rush Hour 2.60 min. | 4.0 avaliação | 2367 exibições Because I owe you an extra video for being out of town on Halloween... Union Square, Manhattan, NY Monday, November 3, 2008, around 4:00 pm Ricky Grove, Ben Grussi and I were in New York that weekend for the Machinima Film Festival. On this Monday afternoon, we'd just come from The Strand bookstore a couple blocks up the street, and were preparing to hop on the subway over to Canal Street for what would end up being a really great dinner in Chinatown. Absolutely nothing of consequence happens in this video, it's just a slice of life capturing the hustle and bustle of this big city by this boy who doesn't spend much time in one. Video was caught with a cheap Pentax Optio A10 camera; audio captured using a Marantz PMD660 with built-in stereo mics (because I forgot to pack a cable for my good microphone). + Informações |

Chinatown: Day for Night (excerpt) 3.10 min. | 0 avaliação | 82 exibições 'Chinatown: Day for Night' is a video installation in which street scenes from the Chinatowns of London, Antwerp, and Sydney are revealed successively. Desolate images of Paifangs, mason lion statues, restaurants, gaming houses and supermarkets are captured in the early hours of the day, lit only by the eerie glow of the incandescent street lights and neon signs which reflect onto the cobblestone streets. The accompanying audio is taken from the relevant location at the opposite end of the day when the streets are at their liveliest.. + Informações |
