Instrumental for Foot and Fingers (13:00) Mike: I just met the man who directed many of the video shoots for WABX Tube Works, a TV program in the early '70's which featured both touring and local bands playing live. The video in question was, in fact, shot after the Magic Band's show in Detroit with Alice Cooper and Ry Cooder. They drove out to the studio (now WXON TV 20), set up, and played what you hear. The guy I met, Chuck, apparently has the master in his basement. Why, you may ask, is this important? Well, it's important to me ;) It happened in my backyard. That footage changed my life. Nifty trivia: the vacuum cleaner visible in the shot (to the right of John French's drum kit) was not Beefheart's, but was placed there by the crew, who had seen photos of Don with a vacuum (which was in fact Chunga, immmortalized on Zappa's Chunga's Revenge). Chuck Reti: I was director of most of the music segments ... The Beefheart session was memorable (a lot because their behavior drove Betsy, our exec producer, literally to tears). The same taping session that night/morning we also shot Ry Cooder, who earlier that night had been on a concert bill with Beefheart. I don't think the Cooder tape survived. While no 'original' material was .... + Informações

Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band Beat Club TV Program Radio Bremen, Funkhaus, Bremen, Germany April 12, 1972 A. I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby Bill Harkleroad: I'm Gonna Booglarize You got played an awful lot and was definitely part of our live show. Like Click Clack and Alice In Blunderland, Booglarize you was a staple part of the set on three basic tours - 1971, 1972 and 1973. I can specifically remember the band performing it on a German TV show called Beat Club. Like all TV shows at that time, they weren't ready for loudly performed music. Our type of music was designed to be played loud, it didn't have to be earsplitting, but it had to be played with a certain amount of volume just to push enough air to feel the excitement level of it - because we did have energy, no question about it! I remember how difficult it was, beating the crap out of the instrument and jumping around, when you could hear people whispering over the low volume. ... Back then live TV shows were only one step better than lip-synching. It always felt funny playing to 30-odd people who were clapping politely while the TV producer was trying to make it look like a crowd 500. It was a very sterile environment and of course the Magic Band came over as being totally 'over-the-top' with our look - I remember stumbling around on my high heeled green shoes. Heiko Hasenbein: They played I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby. The presenter called the song burlesque and pointed out that Captain Beefheart is .... + Informações

I got a chance to meet him backstage at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, California, and Don and I spent about two hours in a wonderful one-on-one conversation, where we talked about everything BUT music. Being a professional musician myself, I'm not usually an awe-struck fan, but, punk kid that I was, I asked Don if he might autograph an LP for me. He said sure, so I went back to my car, came back with an armful and said, "Which one?" His eyes lit up, and Don signed every one, inscribed, "To Whitney - love over gold. Love, Don" and the date. Holland was beautiful at that time, and I remember that we were all quite enamored with the area, especially the nearby art museum that the entire band took a 'field trip' (for a lack of a better term) to. "Our sets will probably be an hour and thirty minutes, I think. That's too long, but after the Grateful Dead and Zappa, what can you do? I mean, if you don't have it, man, you have to play longer. It makes me feel funny. It's an insult to people to stay up there that long." Long sets also mean more lyrics to be recommitted to memory - not an appealing prospect with a repertoire as complex and lengthy as Van Vliet's. "I have to learn all of that vomit, you know? It's like reaching back in a toilet, bringing it back up. God, that stuff is so far back to me at this point I mean, Jesus Christ, I can't even remember where my keys are in my pocket." Van Vliet and the Magic Band (with new guitarist Richard Snyder replacing the recently departed Drumbo) will kick off a major US tour on the East Coast in late November, then head west after a brief holiday break. First, though, the group will embark on a two-week tour of Europe. Don likes visiting Europe.. + Informações

Clad in white, confident to the point of arrogance, the Captain stalked, growled and purred across the stage in his finest voice, laying down that old time, Vermont Moonlight religion like we haven't heard it in years - waving, gesticulating and haranguing the crowd, foot up on the monitor speakers, eyes gleaming like an astral politician's. The audience of a couple of thousand mere earthlings were transfixed, mesmerized by the envoys from a distant galaxy, with Beefheart in complete and absolute control. With a real magic band behind him Beefheart put paid to the ugly rumours that he'd gone soft and sentimental, as Winged Eel Fingerling and slide guitar man Denny Wally put real iron back into the Beefheart stage show. I got drunk and passed out on the monitors. I only missed one song (I think). Beefheart took to staring me in the eyes and howling. Oh yeah, this was the day after John Lennon's death. Beefheart muttered something about exploitation when someone handed him a Lennon memorial T-shirt. After the gig, Feldman approached me and I pulled on his beard. He told me they were playing the Mudd Club after (but didn't ask for directions). Anyone ever come across a video of Captain Beefheart's Mudd Club performance (the day after John Lennon's death)? I was one of the handful of fans there and know it exists (Gary Lucas told me he confiscated the master: it was standard practice by the club for all performance to be taped). It was a wild night. Some girl in a big red sweater (good looking and drunk as all hell) was hangin' all over me. She kept throwing change at the Captain telling him to shut up. I told the Cap I didn't know who this chick was. (in hindsight, I shoulda gone for the chick.) The Cap and I got into a stareing match -- he singing away inches from my face as I .... + Informações
