Instrumental for Foot and Fingers (13:00) Mike: I just met the man who directed many of the video shoots for WABX Tube Works, a TV program in the early '70's which featured both touring and local bands playing live. The video in question was, in fact, shot after the Magic Band's show in Detroit with Alice Cooper and Ry Cooder. They drove out to the studio (now WXON TV 20), set up, and played what you hear. The guy I met, Chuck, apparently has the master in his basement. Why, you may ask, is this important? Well, it's important to me ;) It happened in my backyard. That footage changed my life. Nifty trivia: the vacuum cleaner visible in the shot (to the right of John French's drum kit) was not Beefheart's, but was placed there by the crew, who had seen photos of Don with a vacuum (which was in fact Chunga, immmortalized on Zappa's Chunga's Revenge). Chuck Reti: I was director of most of the music segments ... The Beefheart session was memorable (a lot because their behavior drove Betsy, our exec producer, literally to tears). The same taping session that night/morning we also shot Ry Cooder, who earlier that night had been on a concert bill with Beefheart. I don't think the Cooder tape survived. Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band Bouton Rouge TV Program Cannes Beach, Cannes, France Casino, Prophit Evening beside the MIDEM Festival January 27, 1968 Possibly the most circulated piece of Beefheart footage with an upgrade. Electricity (3:50) Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do (2:50, cut) Don Van Vliet didn't play horn on these titles. The Alternative Cannes Beach Publicity Shot shows Don playing horn, so they must have played more titles. John Platt: Either just before or just after the UK visit the band attended MIDEM, the annual music biz convention in Cannes. This may well have been the prime reason for the European visit - ie for Buddah to market three of their acts. Whilst in Cannes the Magic band played a quasi-impromptu gig on the beach. Contrary to popular belief this was not just a photo-opportunity (hence the French album sleeve) but a proper performance. Their equipment was borrowed from the Blossom Toes, one of whom (Kevin Westlake) acted as roadie, along with ex T. Bone Gary Farr. The set was filmed by French TV and two numbers from it, Electricity and Sure Nuff 'n' Yes I Do were shown on the 3rd February, as part of a rock programme entitled 'Bouton Rouge' (both numbers survive in French TV archive) Michel Lecame: The concert took place at the 2nd MIDEM festival which stands for 'Marche International du Disque et de L'Edition Musicale'. It was so bad at the Paramount (Oakland) show that I thought Zappa was going to come out and say something, but he didn't ... The Captain was ready for em at Winterland as you can hear on the tape. In fact I believe he was provoking the crowd at Winterland. I do recall the Roland Kirk dedication. After Beefheart finished and before Zappa came on about 20% of the crowd, including yours truly, left. In fact that was the last time I would go see Zappa. Jay Soule: I'm pretty sure I was at the Oakland show mentioned here. An interesting Magic Band in that there was no bass guitar. All the bass came from Bruce Fowler's trombone, which Beefheart called "air bass," and it had an enormous, deep sound. John French was on drums, tap danced a little, and did background vocals on Electricity. And do I remember right that Elliot Ingber was back on guitar?
