The city of Canterbury, or as the Romans called it -- Durovernum Cantiacorum, lies in Kent in the southeast region of England. Pope Gregory the Great sent Augustine to the area in 597 AD to convert the heathen English, and after asking permission of King Athelbert of Kent, Augustine built his priory on the present cathedral grounds. Thomas Becket, archbishop of Canterbury, was murdered in the building in 1170. The cathedral has grown massive over the years and is now the oldest church in England that's still in use. The city is charming, with great shopping and tremendous history and heritage, and it's a lot more fun than it was when Geoffrey Chaucer wrote "The Canterbury Tales" in 1387.. + Informações
