Captain Calvert sings The Only Ones. I didn't explain it when I uploaded this vid coz it's a minimalist song so I gave it a minimal description, but basically the vid shows "only ones" - pioneers in flight. Starting with Icarus, we move on to Bleriot and the early aviators. Next up is Willi Messerschmitt's jet and then space rockets. The only way to finish was to have THE MAN himself: Gagarin. He is the ultimate "only one" and his place in history is assured forever. Whatever comes later, no matter what mankind might achieve in the future, Gagarin will always be the first cosmonaut. One of the last recordings Robert made, this track was recorded at Dave Anderson's Foel Studios in 1987. Anderson and John Weinzierl were recording the latest Amon Duul album and asked Robert if he would like to get involved (Anderson having toured with Krankschaft the year before). Robert jumped at the chance, as Weinzierl recalls: "At the studio they had to hire two sound-engineers working continuously in 12 hour shifts each to keep up with Robert's creative pace. During the sessions as we played along you could already hear it in the background: hack, hack, hack - Robert, hammering the lyrics into his typewriter which he handed out to us immediately. Today he'd probably have a laptop..." The album wasn't released until the year after Robert's death (1989), under the title "Die Losung" Weinzierl wasn't happy about the release, but that's another story... From the 1986 album Test Tube Conceived. "I am not at all opposed to scientific progress, but what I am opposed to is the possible misuse of scientific discoveries which is the main danger we face. We are now living in an almost infinitely scientifically possible world. When you look at the advances that we know have been made already in, say, biology, we have to look very carefully, there have to be very strong controls over what is done with this knowledge. The possibility of creating human beings in test-tubes has been around since the fifties. What is being made availbale to the public now, I don`t think is necessarily indicative of what actually is availble to scientists in research laboratories who haven`t published their papers yet. The prospects are quite terrifying that a human being can actually be created..... It seems likely to me that they have already found a way of being able to create human life without the necessity of the womb being involved at all - I am sure they can do that. (...) Biography Born Robert Newton Calvert in Pretoria, South Africa, Calvert's parents moved to England when he was two years of age and later attended school in London and Margate. He began his career by writing poetry and in 1967 formed a Street Theatre group Street Dada Nihilismus. He was best known as the lead singer, poet and frontman of Hawkwind intermittently from 1972-1979 during which time he co-wrote their hit single "Silver Machine" and directed their Space Ritual Tour. Calvert suffered from bipolar disorder, at one point being sectioned under the Mental Health Act, Lemmy would sing on the single version of "Silver Machine", his vocal an overdub of a live recording taken at the Roundhouse in London. "They tried everyone else singing it except me" Lemmy later said. During periods away from Hawkwind duties, and after finally leaving the group in 1979, Calvert worked on his solo career, his creative output including albums, stage plays, poetry, and a novel. His first solo album, Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters, attained mainstream success. His other musical collaborators include Michael Moorcock, Brian Eno, Arthur Brown, Jim Capaldi, Steve Pond, Inner City Unit, Vivian Stanshall, Nektar, John Greaves, Adrian Wagner, Amon Düül II, and Spirits Burning (posthumously). Calvert died of a heart attack in 1988 in Ramsgate, England. Nik Turner, and other former Hawkwind musicians are currently collaborating as Hawklords as a tribute to Calvert.. + Informações
