The Byrds SECOND time on TV, EVER! The band made their televison debut just three days before this broadcast, 5/8/65 on "Shivaree". This is a very interesting video for many reasons. First, Gene Clark is on a Fender Xll 12 string guitar (As opposed to Tambourine), Gene & David's vocal mics are not in the mix until the second chorus. AND; the coolest anecdote of all: If you listen carefully, you can hear Gene Clark's barritone vocal part in the second chorus during "In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you". This part was NOT on the record; reason being is that Gene's vocals were on the same track as Leon Russell's electric piano, which was taken out of the mix. The vocals here are LIVE, while the music is the recorded backing track. Another noteworthy point; Roger McGuinn isn't even pretending to "Sinc" his guitar part correctly, by playing his famous "Scruggsy picking style", but rather strumming in earnest. :-) Watch Gene Clark butt in on Frankie Avalon!! WONDERFUL vid from the band's second and final appearance on "Hulla...." This is a pre-recorded backing track with live vocals. Unfortunately Gene & David's mics are mixed low, so we don't quite get the full "Byrds Splendor" as far as the harmonies go. Listen to how the tape slows down during Crosby's close-up. Busted!! :-) This and the Sullivan shows are the only colour footage that I know of from the "Original 5". What may be the very last performance for the group (Not counting reunions of course) this is from "The Midnight....". The drummer here is Jim "Moon" Schulz . He used to fill in and play with The Byrds on various concerts. Jim also played drums for Spanky and our Gang, and was also Evonne Elliman's and Alice Cooper's road? manager. From the band's 2nd out of three appearances on "Shindig", this is one of the VERY FEW TOTALLY LIVE TV show appearances the band did. The guitar solo is chopped in half, plus no guitar outro in order to fit the show's very strict time contraints. This performance also exposes the band's weakness as a "Live act", which they were indeed known for. Notice on the close-up of Michael Clarke, his foot is not even on the kick drum pedal!!! The stiff, plodding sound of the rythym section, coupled with the kind of music they were doing, and the '60's sound system situation; all these things really worked against the band. It's a kick to hear Gene Clark try to cram the word "Probably" into damn near two syllables, as they are playing the song extra fast to fit the allocated time.
