Nice one from Brian's 1996 "Secrets" cd. Brian Culbertson (born January 12, 1973) is a smooth jazz musician and instrumentalist from Decatur, Illinois, United States. Son of jazz band director and trumpeter Jim Culbertson, Brian's instruments include the keyboard and trombone. Heavily influenced by funk, much of Culbertson's material is funk-based instrumental, but he has begun calling upon vocalists such as Trey Lorenz, Marc Nelson and Kenny Lattimore to add to his later pieces. Culbertson has released eleven albums so far. The first three were on the Blue Moon label: "Long Night Out" 1994, "Modern Life" 1995, and "After Hours" 1996. After moving to the Atlantic Records, three more albums followed: "Secrets" 1997, "Somethin' Bout Love" 1999, and the critically acclaimed "Nice & Slow" 2001. "Come on Up" 2003 was released on Warner Jazz, and Culbertson then moved to GRP Records for his project, "It's On Tonight" 2005 which debuted at #1 on Billboard Magazine's contemporary-jazz charts, just to name a few. Jeff Jarvis has distinguished himself as a trumpeter, composer, jazz educator, and music publisher. He serves as Director of Jazz Studies at California State University Long Beach and frequently appears as a honors jazz band conductor, clinician and lecturer. Jeff is the Music Director Emeritus of the Central New York Jazz Orchestra, and is a former Vice-President of the International Association For Jazz Education. Jeff is part-owner of Kendor Music, Inc., the first educational music publisher to provide jazz charts written especially for students. His solo recordings as a jazz trumpeter and composer have placed high on national air play charts and have won him critical acclaim. Jeff's early career as a trumpeter/arranger for Philadelphia International Records producers Gamble and Huff encompasses over 100 albums for such names as Lou Rawls, Melba Moore, The Jacksons, The O'Jays and many more. On June 3rd, 2009, Brian Culbertson and a small army of well respected musicians in the Smooth Jazz community, descended upon the legendary Capitol Studios in Hollywood to film and record a live career retrospect of well loved tunes from his GRP and other labels catalogs.The resulting session is presented in full on a DVD directed by filmmaker Joey Castro and on a CD with 12 of the songs they performed including the brand new song Go. Musical guests includes Ray Parker Jr., Dave Koz, Michael Lington, Eric Marienthal, Eric Darius, Jim Culbertson and Sheldon Reynolds. The band consists of Lenny Castro, Chris Miskel, Lamar Jones, Eddie Miller, Michael Stever, Rob Schaer, Nick Lane, Wayne Bruce and Marqueal Jordan. I think its important to make this available to people because this DVD is definitely a milestone for me, Brian comments. Its just something special with all these legends and great musicians getting together in the studio at the same time. The legendary bass player, Nate Watts, who has played with Stevie Wonder for 30 some years and is his musical director came over today and laid down some incredible parts on BC-SR Song 1. His childhood buddy, Ray Parker Jr., was over too as well as Sheldon Reynolds....lots of good stories were told today!! Ray and Nate started a band together when they were 6 years old back in Detroit!!! That's some history right there. It was an absolute pleasure recording with Nate today cause besides being one of the best musicians, he's one of the coolest guys you'll ever meet. Check out this video as he lays down the vamp out.
