Originally composed by Jim Pepper, a jazz musician of Creek and Kaw Indian heritage, this version of the song was performed by Brewer and Shipley on their 1969 album, "Weeds". It's based on a chant that was handed down to Jim from his grandfather. The video is a slide-show set to music, using some of the most picturesque places in America, animals that are held as traditionally sacred to most all Native American tribes, as well as photos and paintings of some esteemed Creek and Kaw leaders. "One Toke Over The Line" was a Top 10 hit in 1971, and was largely responsible for introducing Brewer & Shipley to the masses. While it is a wonderful and uplifting song, "One Toke" landed Brewer & Shipley on Nixon's Enemies List and was banned by the FCC. But that didn't stop Lawrence Welk from featuring "One Toke Over The Line" on his show. Several artists recorded the song in 1971, apparently thinking it was a gospel song. Brewer and Shipley__One Toke Over the Line__No Copyright Infringement Intended__Brewer & Shipley were an American folk rock music duo of the late 1960s through 1970s, consisting of singer-songwriters Mike Brewer and Tom Shipley. They were known for their intricate guitar work, vocal harmonies and socially conscious lyrics. Their greatest success was the song "One Toke Over the Line" from their 1970 album Tarkio. They also had two other single albums which scored the Billboard charts: "Tarkio Road" (1970) and "Shake Off The Demon" (1971). They continue to perform, both separately and together, usually in the Midwest of the USA. The two Midwestern natives met each other numerous times at various coffeehouse gigs before settling in Los Angeles to write music together in 1968, producing their first two albums, Down in LA and Weeds. Even though mutual friends in bands such as The Association and Buffalo Springfield lived in Los Angeles, they left California during 1969, returning to Kansas City, Missouri, where they made a meager living by playing in college towns. They derived the name of their next album, Tarkio, from a regular gig they played in Tarkio, Missouri.
