Sérgio Santos Mendes (Portuguese pronunciation: [?s???iu ?s??tu? ?m???d?i?]; born February 11, 1941 in Niterói, Brazil) is a Brazilian musician. He has released over thirty-five albums, and plays bossa nova heavily crossed with jazz and funk. Mendes is married to Gracinha Leporace who regularly performs vocals for her husband and can also be heard on his 2006 version of the Jorge Ben Jor song "Mas Que Nada" with Black Eyed Peas. The child of a physician in Niterói, Brazil, Mendes attended the local conservatory with hopes of becoming a classical pianist. As his interest in jazz grew, he started playing in nightclubs in the late-1950s just as bossa nova, a jazz-inflected derivative of samba, was emerging. Mendes played with Antonio Carlos Jobim (regarded as a mentor) and many US jazz musicians who toured Brazil. Mendes formed the Sexteto Bossa Rio and recorded Dance Moderno in 1961. Touring Europe and the United States, Mendes recorded albums with Cannonball Adderley and Herbie Mann and played Carnegie Hall. Mendes moved to the US in 1964 and cut two albums under the Sergio Mendes & Brasil '65 group name with Capitol Records and Atlantic Records. When sales were tepid, he replaced his Brazilian born vocalist Wanda de Sá with the distinctive voice of Chicago native Lani Hall (who learned Mendes' Portuguese material phonetically), switched to Herb Alpert's A&M label, and released Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66, an album that went platinum based largely on .... + Informações

"The Look Of Love" was initially composed by Burt Bacharach as an instrumental for the 1967 film spoof of James Bond, "Casino Royale". Burt claims he was inspired to write the song by looking at the early rushes of Ursula Andress in this film. It was decided that lyrics should be added so Hal David gladly obliged, and the song was first recorded by Dusty Springfield. When "The Look Of Love" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song, Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 was chosen to sing the song for the television broadcast. Their performance and subsequent recording led to it becoming a Top 10 hit in June of 1968. Janis Hansen sings lead along Lani Hall (Herb Alpert's wife) on this recording.. + Informações

Three years later Brazilian musician Sergio Mendes gave it a catchy, tight bossa nova arrangement with soaring vocals by Lani Hall. It became his signature song, although in Brazil Jorge Ben's version is the most well known one. This was featured in the 1990 Tom Hanks movie Joe Versus The Volcano and the 1997 movie Austin Powers International Man of Mystery. The Brazilian group Tamba Trio had a #34 hit in the UK in 1998 with their version, which was surprisingly the first time the song entered the UK charts. In 2006 Sergio Mendes re-recorded the song with The Black Eyed Peas with his wife Gracinha Leporace providing additional vocals.
