Appreciation Night is the debut full-length from the Chicago-based band Bound Stems. The anchor of the album is their hometown, where the din of the elevated train, clattering turnstiles, late night house parties, intimate conversations and the soft crunch of winter's snow are layered throughout the 15 track sequence. The songs themselves, arranged with the intricate precision of a timepiece, are filled with rhythm patterns mirroring youth's reckless abandon, dissonant guitar washes and warm keyboards, all of which build to crescendos of dizzying heights. The narrative threads, coming-of-age vignettes interwoven with historical references from the Civil War to present day, are delivered in a patchwork of vocal melodies that are as memorable as any instrumentation on the album. Bound Stems' debut EP earned the band early critical attention in 2005 from The New York Times, Alternative Press [4/5], Pitchfork [7.1/10], Spin.com's "Band of the Month" [March 06]; Entertainment Weekly called the EP "a woozy triumph" and Chicago Reader praised the songs as "smart and ambitious.". + Informações

Bound Stems are another up and coming Chicago band, but their sound takes more from the angular emo heritage of Washington, DC, than from Chicago's past. They're another one of those regional bands that I've been wanting to see for a while, and it turns out I'll have a chance to do so again soon when they open for the Long Winters. Hopefully this foreshadows them becoming a frequently visiting act ala the Dials or the Reputation. Madison could use more regular appearances by touring acts that aren't a) jam bands, or b) the Electric Six.. + Informações

I was quite glad to have another dose of the Bound Stems so soon after we saw them open for Maritime. In just two sets they've become one of those regional acts that I really look forward to seeing. Their playfulness on-stage did a nice job of corralling the crowd and setting things up for the Long Winters to come out -- hopefully they also made enough fans of their own to be back here frequently.. + Informações

We had the pleasure of witnessing the public debut of this new Bound Stems show, which was made all the better by the big recorder melody in the middle of it. Or would have been, that is, if the band's keyboardist/recorder player knew which part of the recorder needed to go by the mic in order to be heard. I think the recorder is woefully underused in indie rock, but it's too bad that you can't really hear it in this performance.. + Informações

Maritime plays the song, "Twins" at the Grog Shop with their tour mates, the Bound Stems, joining them on stage. This was the last song of the last night of tour together for the two bands. This on- stage collaboration, was a farewell celebration. The audio engineer, Swampy, provided the great sounding audio to the mini disc. This show was worth the 14 hour drive.. + Informações

Sometimes I feel like Club 770 is the best venue in town (except for the inevitable technical problems). Even though I often find myself not caring about the acts that play there, when I do, it's usually with other bands that I like. Exactly one year before this show it was Maritime, Bound Stems and Kid, You'll Move Mountains. This time it was Ra Ra Riot, with the Virgins and local up-and-comers National Beekeepers Society opening. I'd been meaning to see NBS for a while -- they actually sent me an invite to a show last summer, but it was on my birthday and my schedule was already spoken for -- so I was really glad to see them on this bill. They play a raucous kind of indie rock that reminds me a lot of Sleeping in the Aviary, if a little more restrained. This clip and the next one both come in at under two minutes, but they manage to sound like songs and not just bursts of sound.. + Informações

This is the thrilling conversation you've been waiting for by Harvey Danger from their 2000 album titled, "King James Version". Harvey Danger was formed in 1994 by Sean Nelson, Jeff Lin, Aaron Huffman, and Evan Sult, all students at the University of Washington in Seattle at the time. The band's first album, Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone?, was originally released in 1997 by the independent Arena Rock Records. It was rereleased on a major label in 1998, which led to the massive success of the single "Flagpole Sitta". However, other singles failed to make an impact, and Harvey Danger faded from the mainstream music scene as quickly as they had arrived. The band's second album, King James Version, which elaborated on the brash, literate post-grunge/indie rock hybrid of the first record, was released in 2000. Though regarded by many fans as superior to its predecessor, it went virtually ignored, the band already having been branded "one hit wonders". Disappointed and dropped by their record label, the band broke up in 2001 and the members shifted their focus to other projects. Some of this activity (most notably Nelson's stint with The Long Winters and as-yet-unreleased collaborations with Chris Walla of Death Cab for Cutie) helped to get them involved in the indie rock scene that had so obviously influenced their music (especially King James Version).
