Marcelle Bordas (1897-1968) was discovered for the stage in the 1930s while working in the fashion industry. A rare female bartione she was quickly noticed and given a recording contract. She concentrated on the "popular" and "folklore" genre and - more unusually for a female siinger - marching songs. She recorded "La femme à barbe" (The bearded woman) and "Ma femme est morte" (My wife is dead). She scored her biggest succes in 1941 with "Ah que la France est belle" (Ah! The beauty of France) which is considered a typical song of Vichy France. Today she is largely forgotten. The video features tourism and travel in the 1930s, including publicity for Belgium's now defunct Sabena Airlines from 1935 (the airline went bankrupt in november 2001). The tango "Gitarren spielt auf" composed by Ludwig Schmidseder (lit. Strike up guitars) was one of the biggest successes of the mid-1930s. Ludwig Schmidseder (1904-71) was a very succesful composer for both the stage and screen. He created some of the biggest stage successes in Germany in the 1930s. At the time they were called "operetta" but in view of their use of modern dance music they should be considered musicals. Later in life he became a household name as .... tv cook!
