After a long number of Music Tours and various shows working as a lighting tech and designer with the likes of George Benson, Prince, Cheap Trick, The Call, Julio Iglesias, Peter Gabriel, James Taylor, Linda Ronstat, ZZ Top, Tom Jones, and, in the course of all that having to put up with unknown comedian Georg Slejko, the antics of world famous juggler Michael Davis and the ever hillarious George Wallace... whew! I took a break from the road and in a discussion with good old Georg Slejko better known to some as "Swampo" or "Rod Bomb" he started to tell me about a challenge that Ken Adamie put to him in order for the "Slaker" (my new name for Swampo himself) to take the stage and become a comedian. Ken was Cheap Trick's Manager back then, and, although Rod Bomer never did go for the gusto, Ken told him that if he put together just 5 minutes of doable material he would produce Georg (no "e') and launch his comedic career. Georg decided to just continue his Tour Bus Comedy with the captive audiences such as the rest of us riding 16 hours and wishin the day was through. Notwithstanding, unlike the melodic horrors Bob Seger clearly put up with, somtimes even with Georg, somewhat known Slejko did have and does have a real quality for work a day comedy and continues to entertain and bust a gut with the folks at Upstaging Inc. in Chicago as well as all the crews Georg still encounters on the road and at the shop. LINK: tinyurl.com Jimmy Clanton was one of the most serious and complex of the generation of teen idols in which he is usually grouped, standing head and shoulders above the likes of Fabian, Bobby Rydell and others, but Clanton was a dedicated R&B enthusiast and singer with a great voice and a genuine feel for New Orleans music. What's more, he also wrote many of the songs that he recorded -- a relative rarity among White singers of his day. Clanton was born in Baton Rouge, LA on September 2, 1940. He reached his teen years just as R&B was starting to find an audience among younger Whites. By the time he formed his first band, the Dixie Cats, in 1956, he was emulating the sounds of Fats Domino, Little Richard and Elvis Presley, and his other influences included Johnny Ace. His rivals in those days included a young John Fred, more than a decade away from his chart-topping "Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)" and Johnny Ramistella, later known as Johnny Rivers and still eight years from his big break. Clanton joined forces with a rival band leader, pianist Dick Holler (later the author of "Abraham, Martin and John"), in The Rockets, a combo that was hot enough to justify a 1957 trip to New Orleans and a visit to Cosimo Matassa, who owned the only recording studio in the city. Teddy Randazzo was never quite as visible as other New York-spawned rock 'n' roll talent of the 1950's -- to name a few, Dion was more of a star and for a lot longer, and the various members of Jay & The Americans enjoyed hits right to the outset of the 1970's. But Randazzo had his day in the sun as a singer, and he also wrote hundreds of songs, and saw many dozens of recordings of the best of his work. Born in Brooklyn in 1937, he was lucky enough to grow up in a musical family, and by 15 was a good enough accordion player to turn professional, as a member of the group the Three Chuckles, who were in the market for a new keyboardman and singer -- the singing took a little time to develop, with help from his decade-older fellow group members Tommy Romano and Russ Gilberto, but when the group started recording, it was the sides that Randazzo sang on that initially hit, and by 1955, at 17, he was the frontman for the group. They had a number one hit with "And The Angels Sing", which had a rocking beat and brought them to the attention of deejay Alan Freed, who put the group into his first jukebox movie, Rock, Rock, Rock (shot in New York, in the Bronx, actually), but also gave Randazzo a solo spot. When the smoke cleared from the movie, Randazzo had decided to go solo. He continued recording for Vik Records, a unit of RCA Victor, and enjoyed a minor success in 1958 with "Little Serenade", and made an appearance in Freed's next movie, Mister Rock And Roll, as well as in the .... + Informações
