Teach Me Tonight-- The Bobbettes ( NY)1961 End 1093.wmv 2.12 min. | 4.870968 avaliação | 8866 exibições The Bobbettes, five young girls from Harlem, became the first all-girl doo-wop group to have a #1 R&B hit and a Top Ten pop hit with their first single, "Mr. Lee," in 1957. Lead singer Reather Dixon (born in 1945), second lead Emma Pought (1944), her soprano sister Jannie Pought (1945), tenor Laura Webb (1943) and alto Helen Gathers (1944) began singing together, along with a couple of other girls, at Public School #109 under the name The Harlem Queens. When local promoter James Daily saw them at an Apollo Theater talent night in late 1956, he took over their management, changed their name to The Bobbettes because he felt the name The Harlem Queens was too raunchy for underage girls (Reather was only eleven at the time), and landed them a contract with Atlantic Records. The girls went into the studio on February 28, 1957, to record four of their own songs, including "Mr. Lee," based on a school teacher the girls didn't like, but re-written at the suggestion of Atlantic to make him (and the recording) more sympathetic. According to Reather, "[Atlantic] told us they loved the song, but we'd have to change words a little. Instead of 'He's the ugliest teacher I ever did see,' we changed it to 'He's the handsomest teacher I ever did see.'" Reather and Dimples shared the lead, singing in unison, to make their voices bigger. Released in June, "Mr Lee" went to the top of the R& B charts and crossed over into pop territory, where it topped out at #6. The girls suddenly found .... + Informações |

Baby You Belong To Me- The Bobbettes-1960-Atlantic.wmv 2.40 min. | 4.6 avaliação | 5929 exibições REQUES song from trogoplumps,,,, The Bobbettes (Manhattan, New York) Personnel : Heather Dixon Reather Dixon Helen Gathers Emma Pought Jannie Pought Laura Webb In an era dominated by male groups, it took an unlikely quintet of public school teens to show the world that a female group could succeed. The Bobbettes were the first female group to have both a Top Ten hit and a number one R&B record. It all started as a pastime for eight girls ranging in age from nine to eleven in New York's Harlem. Schoolmates that began singing in the glee club of PS109 in 1955. Calling themselves the Harlem Queens, they began by doing local amateur nights. Gradually over the next two years the octet shrunk to a quintet. After appearing at the Apollo Theater's famed amateur night, they didn't win, they broadened their already growing following. Soon thereafter, James Dailey took over the group's management. Feeling that "The Harlem Queens" wasn't an appropriate name for five girls in there early teens he changed the name to the Bobbettes. Dailey got them a recording contract with Atlantic Records and had them in the recording studio by the end of February 1957. Their first four recordings were group compositions and it wasn't a fluke. They would write ten of their first eighteen recorded songs. The group had already written a few songs and one which was the legendary "Mr. Lee," who was actually a teacher of some of the Bobbettes. The group's first single was released in June 1957. Although .... + Informações |

The group, which originally formed in Harlem, New York, in 1955, was first known as "The Harlem Queens." The girls first met while singing at the Glee Club at PS 109 in Harlem. They were soon discovered by James Dailey, a record producer, who also became their manager, while playing a concert at the legendary Apollo Theater's amateur night, and were quickly signed to a contract on the Atlantic Record Label. In 1957, the girls released their first hit single, "Mr. Lee," an uptempo song in which the narrator proclaims her devotion to her crush - her school teacher. The girls actually disliked the real-life Mr. Lee and the original lyrics to the song were something of a put-down, but Atlantic insisted the group revise the lyrics before recording the song. The single, backed by "Look at the Stars," became their biggest hit recording ever, peaking at #6 on the Billboard Pop singles chart and spending four weeks at #1 on the R&B chart. This made the Bobbettes the first girl group to release a #1 R&B hit that also made the pop top 10. After a series of novelty songs for Atlantic that were unsuccessful, they recorded .... + Informações |
