For the "OC Can You Play?" contest, which runs January 16th through February 6th here in Orange County, California, I visited a few pianos this past Tuesday, January 18th, together with a friend who helped take the videos. Here's more information about that contest: www.pacificsymphony.org This piano is in the Macy's Home Store wing of South Coast Plaza, one of three pianos located in this shopping mall complex. I apologize for the sound quality of these, but I did not have a microphone handy that I could put behind the soundboard of the piano. I should have borrowed one from a friend or family member and learned how to use it. If I did, I'm sure the sound would have been better. Then again, perhaps it is better that some of what I play gets drowned out! Also, I think that sort of miking may have played down the very resonant acoustics, audible here, of this large space with hard surfaces... a kind of room that I have rarely played in before. Anyway, this rag was composed by Charley Straight and published in 1918 by the Joe Morris Music Co. in New York. It is really remarkable that it was published in the first place, due to its great difficulty for the average amateur pianist (although I'd bet that most professionals could have played it). This tune has an earlier pre-history. Chris Dixon discusses his non-fiction book about Cortes Bank, the submerged mountain that is 100-miles southwest of Los Angeles. Said to create some of the largest waves on the planet, it is a dangerous and seductive place for "big wave surfers" who risk their lives trying to surf it. Chris researched the history of this mysterious place, from the ancient people that lived on the neighboring islands to the first sailors that attempted to map the California Coast and nearly died in the waves of Cortes Bank. Today, however, as games burst beyond the living room, and traditional forms and platforms of play they are turning up everywhere. With the rise of serious games which make use of videogames and videogame technologies in areas beyond entertainment, there is even larger requirement for videogames to change form and integrate with platforms and systems that were previously never considered relevant to game development. As games move to more pervasive forms, spanning both entertainment and non-entertainment fields, we need to define and understand this gamut of activity and the technologies that can support them. What new models, design, and engineering patterns exist that are, and increasingly going to be essential to a world where games are everywhere? Drawing on experiences with large organizations, non-traditional videogames forms, and analysis of the commercial videogame industry this talk not only illuminates the wider gamut of videogame activity but where there are unique needs and opportunities, especially for cutting edge Web services and platforms, that until better supported are, in fact, holding back the larger ascendency of games into everyday life.
