He married Cora Allen young and worked as a labourer, but began to lose his eyesight in his mid-teens. According to researcher Bruce Bastin, "While he was living in Rockingham he began to have trouble with his eyes. He went to see a doctor in Charlotte who allegedly told him that he had ulcers behind his eyes, the original damage having been caused by some form of snow-blindness". However, there is an alternative story that he was blinded by an ex-girlfriend who threw chemicals in his face. I'M A RATTLESNAKIN' DADDY (1935) by Blind Boy Fuller 3.27 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 4178 exibições This song was recorded in New York in 1935 by Blind Boy Fuller (1907-1941), and was amongst his first recordings. Fuller was one of the most popular of the recorded Piedmont blues artists with rural Black Americans, a group that also included Blind Blake, Josh White, and Buddy Moss. Blind Boy Fuller was also an incredible fingerpicking guitar player (apparently influenced by Blind Blake and Rev Gary Davis), as well as being a great singer. He would rip notes from his resonator guitar, fingerpicking in a hard edged rocking style that complemented his vibrant vocals. There are probably better examples of his sophisticated guitar style than this song, but I love it because it sounds like the beginnings of fifties 12-bar rock. Even ol' Hank could've done a version of this (in fact many of his songs sound similar). Obviously there are no clips of Fuller available; in fact I could find only three images of him. I have cropped, reversed, and manipulated those images to make them seem like a lot more, and have put them in a slideshow (along with some other photos). Comments are invited.. + Informações |

Worn Out Engine - Blind Boy Fuller - Acoustic Blues 3.97 min. | 4.857143 avaliação | 17323 exibições Blind Boy Fuller (Fulton Allen 1907-1941) began playing guitar in 1927, shortly before losing his sight. Depending on music for his living, he worked with Sonny Terry, Gary Davis and Bull City Red in the streets of Durham, North Carolina. He became a popular and influential recording artist, cutting no fewer than 129 songs in the six years before his death. It's now recognised that Fuller blended his own ideas with those of numerous forerunners and contemporaries, among them Buddy Moss, Josh White, Gary Davis, Blind Blake and Blind Lemon Jefferson. The resulting synthetis had an enormous influence in the Piedmont states and beyond, and in that sense Fuller indeed father a style. As a songwriter, he was imaginative and poetic on slow blues, and often ingenious on up-tempo rags and bawdy numbers. I first heard this song by Carolina bluesman Baby Tate accompanied by the incomparable Peg Leg Sam, a great harmonica player (look for his vid on youtube). Later I found a transcription of Fuller's version in a Stefan Grossman tabbook "Masters of Country Blues Guitar - Blind Boy Fuller" Both men played it out of A position but I changed it to the key of G, using different aspects of Fuller's and Baby Tate's playing. I love that cool descending bass lick. Blind Boy Fuller - Homesick and Lonesome Blues.wmv 3.17 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 676 exibições www.youtube.com BornFulton Allen, c. 1908, in Wadesboro, North Carolina, died February 13, 1941, in Durham, North Carolina; son of Calvin Allen and Jane Walker; married Cora Mae Martin, 1926. One of the most popular exponents of the Piedmont blues style, guitarist and singer Blind Boy Fuller recorded, between 1935 and 1940, 135 sides that found their way into the repertoires of a great number of bluesmen of the pre-World War II era. An understudy of guitarist Blind Gary Davis, Fuller created a personal style which brought an individual stamp to the large body of his work. Fuller's musical repertoire included ragtime-influenced "hokum" songs (double entendre numbers) and down home blues, several of which he displayed an exceptional talent on slide guitar. Though much of his material was culled from traditional folk and blues numbers, Fuller possessed a formidable finger-picking guitar style - one that influenced musicians such as Brownie McGhee who, during the first years of his career, performed under the name of Blind Boy Fuller No. 2. Blind Boy Fuller was born Fulton Allen in 1908 in the small country market town of Wadesboro, North Carolina. Despite his later musical sobriquet, Fuller was born sighted, and attended school in Wadesboro until the fourth grade. After his mother's death, his father, Calvin Allen, moved the family to Rockingham, North Carolina, where Fulton eventually learned to play the guitar. In 1926 Allen married fourteen year-old Cora Mae Martin and .... + Informações |
