?Pistol Slapper Blues" (Fuller) Recorded: New York City, April 05, 1938 Blind Boy Fuller (vcl) (g), Sonny Terry (h) Blind Boy Fuller (born Fulton Allen) (July 10, 1907[1] - February 13, 1941) was an American blues guitarist and vocalist. He was one of the most popular of the recorded Piedmont blues artists with rural Black Americans, a group that also included Blind Blake, Josh White, and Buddy Moss. Fulton Allen was born in Wadesboro, North Carolina to Calvin Allen and Mary Jane Walker. He was one of a family of 10 children, but after his mother's death he moved with his father to Rockingham. As a boy he learned to play the guitar and also learned from older singers the field hollers, country rags, and traditional songs and blues popular in poor, rural areas. He married Cora Allen young and worked as a labourer, but began to lose his eyesight in his mid-teens. According to researcher Bruce Bastin, "While he was living in Rockingham he began to have trouble with his eyes. He went to see a doctor in Charlotte who allegedly told him that he had ulcers behind his eyes, the original damage having been caused by some form of snow-blindness". However, there is an alternative story that he was blinded by an ex-girlfriend who threw chemicals in his face. By 1928 he was completely blind, and turned to whatever employment he could find as a singer and entertainer, often playing in the streets. Blind Blake recorded this song in 1931. In fact he recorded two parts of it and there are three takes known (you can hear them on the budget box "Blind Blake - All the Published Sides" on the JSP label). These takes, although using the same progression, are very different in licks and tempo. It shows how great a creative genius Blake was. In only one of the takes he uses the tremolo brushing, which is very unique in country blues. It's of that version that I used the first guitarsolo. The rest I pieced together from several Blake songs. For this occasion I used a cheap 1930ties Supertone guitar (straight from the Sears Roebuck catalog), sounds pretty "vintage" to me :-) John Miller did a great version of this song too on his first Blue Goose lp (out of print, somebody please reissue this). Blind Boy Fuller (Fulton Allen 1907-1941) began playing guitar in 1927, shortly before losing his sight. Depending on music for his living, he worked with Sonny Terry, Gary Davis and Bull City Red in the streets of Durham, North Carolina. He became a popular and influential recording artist, cutting no fewer than 129 songs in the six years before his death. It's now recognised that Fuller blended his own ideas with those of numerous forerunners and contemporaries, among them Buddy Moss, Josh White, Gary Davis, Blind Blake and Blind Lemon Jefferson. The resulting synthetis had an enormous influence in the Piedmont states and beyond, and in that sense Fuller indeed father a style. As a songwriter, he was imaginative and poetic on slow blues, and often ingenious on up-tempo rags and bawdy numbers. I first heard this song by Carolina bluesman Baby Tate accompanied by the incomparable Peg Leg Sam, a great harmonica player (look for his vid on youtube). Later I found a transcription of Fuller's version in a Stefan Grossman tabbook "Masters of Country Blues Guitar - Blind Boy Fuller" Both men played it out of A position but I changed it to the key of G, using different aspects of Fuller's and Baby Tate's playing. I love that cool descending bass lick.
